This summer, a handful of McIntire students and alumni put their classroom training to the test through their own ventures in the 10-week UVA i.Lab Incubator program.

From CorridorIQ and Katalyze to Girls Who Innovate, Ascend Performance, and Hydra, each team came in with an idea, and spent the summer testing it with the people they hope to serve.

That meant listening closely, getting honest feedback, and, in some cases, changing course. It's one of the most valuable lessons in entrepreneurship: realizing your first idea may not be the right one, and doing the work to find a better path forward.

In the M.S. in Commerce program, the assignments are designed with the job in mind.

One example: Students built a machine learning model to predict whether consumers would shop at Sephora or Ulta, then translated their findings into a targeted marketing strategy.

That intentional structure gives students opportunities to practice the work before they enter the workplace.

Before they earn their degrees, UVA M.S. in Commerce students are already solving the kinds of complex business problems they’ll face on the job—using data, strategy, and communication to create measurable impact.

Thank you to Tommy McBride of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management for returning to Grounds this week to speak with McIntire students about careers in wealth management and financial-planning practices that can serve them throughout their professional lives. His annual visit is part of the Professional Speaker Series hosted by the Center for Investors and Financial Markets (CIFM) at the UVA McIntire School of Commerce, which brings students into conversation with practitioners across the financial industry.

We are also grateful for Tommy's continued support of the Barron's Investing in Education Program at UVA. Through his generosity, McIntire faculty, staff, and students have complimentary access to Barron's and MarketWatch—valuable resources for staying informed about markets, business, and the economy.

Congratulations, M.S. in the Management of IT Class of 2026!

This weekend marked the culmination of an incredible year of learning, growth, and hard work. You challenged yourselves, learned alongside one another, and brought your experience and perspectives to every step of the journey.

Now, you leave McIntire ready to take what you've learned into your organizations, your communities, and whatever comes next.

When UVA assembled a 22-member committee to shape the University's next strategic plan, only one undergraduate made the list. Meet Noah Dyer, a fourth-year McIntire student, captain of the Virginia's Men's Swimming & Diving team, and the sole undergraduate on President Scott Beardsley's strategic planning committee.

Noah is honest about the weight of it. He describes "mixed feelings of excitement and pressure" in trying to represent as many student voices as possible. But instead of speaking only for athletes or Commerce students, he's chosen to serve on behalf of the entire student body.

And he's carrying a McIntire lesson with him. From Professor Paul Seaborn's strategy course, he learned that real strategy requires trade-offs, not just good intentions.

What does a business school's student government actually do? At McIntire, the answer is making sure students feel valued and heard.

The 2026-2027 Commerce Council leaders have built the plan for the whole year around three words: unity, engagement, and wellness. President Rohan Misra, Vice President Sophia White, and Treasurer Jackson Manderfield describe the Council as a building block that drives the community, one that is intentionally designed to give every student the best possible experience. How will they do it? By facilitating connection among students, faculty, and alumni alike, and welcoming advice, mentorship, and career conversations from the broader Commerce community.

The plans are supportive, fun, and down to earth. Pickleball and basketball tournaments. A "walk and talk" that gets professors and students out of the classroom and moving. Food drops. A holiday event still in the works.
