In the Miller Center's Obama Oral History Project, former CIA Director John Brennan discussed the unexpected continuity between the policies he enacted under Obama and those pursued by Trump's CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

Reprinted from The Realist Review. Over the course of his three presidential campaigns (2016, 2020, 2024), President Donald J. Trump promised an America First foreign policy – one that would see America pull back from postwar European security commitments, end the war in Ukraine, and keep the coun

President Trump is treating America’s 250th birthday celebration as a businessman would, argues the Miller Center's Barbara Perry.

“Branding and business have been his business, and the fact that he puts his name on everything before he became president, I guess, shouldn’t surprise us that he wants his presidency and legacy to be known by his name and his name only."

Officials in President Trump’s Cabinet meetings spend at least 1 out of every 6 sentences praising him.

“Flattery and blind loyalty may be good for a president’s ego, but they rarely produce the candid advice that leads to sound policy decisions,” says the Miller Center's Chris Lu, who served as White House Cabinet secretary under President Obama.

This “flattery,” as The New York Times called it, is not what former presidents have heard in their Cabinet meetings.
