Looking forward toward to this Wednesday when Grammy-award winning, multi-style cellist Mike Block will be visiting us at EWU! Wednesday’s Noon Convocation in the EWU Music Recital Hall is free and open to the public. After that he will stay to work with the EWU string orchestra.

Guest performer and clinician Mike Block is a multi-style cello player, composer, singer, and educator, who was Associate Professor at the Berklee College of Music from 2012 to 2022, and since 2018 has been on the faculty of the New England Conservatory.

As an educator, Mike is dedicated to creating transformative experiences with an emphasis on creativity, collaboration, and multi-style exploration. Mike is the Founder/Director of multiple annual programs, including the Mike Block String Camp, Silkroad’s Global Musician Workshop each August in Boston, MA, and Hangzhou, China, and Insight/Onsite: A Creative Music Retreat each June at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater in Mill Run, PA. Mike also teaches over 400 cello students online through his Multi-Style Cello School atArtistWorks.com and authored the book Contemporary Cello Etudes, published by Berklee Press.
Since 2005, Mike has been a member of the Silk Road Ensemble, founded by Yo-Yo Ma, with which he has been featured as a cellist and vocal soloist, contributed arrangements and compositions, and earned a 2017 Grammy® Award for Best Global Music Album.

VIOLA VACANCY | Calling all Violists! The United States Air Force Strings will host an audition on April 27th, 2026, with application materials being due by March 22nd, 2026.

The United States Air Force Strings often perform at high-level military and government events as part of a string quartet, as a unique formation called the Strolling Strings, and in collaboration with other musicians from the U.S. Air Force Band to play a diverse range of musical genres. Members of the Air Force Strings also regularly participate in educational outreach programs and concerts throughout the Washington, D.C. area.

This full-time career opportunity includes:
- Annual starting salary of $80,000-$87,000
- 30 days of paid vacation annually
- Full medical and dental coverage
- Post 9-11 GI Bill (up to $80,000 for college)
- Comprehensive military benefits
- Minimum four-year enlistment
- Applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 41 (must not have yet reached 42nd birthday)
