Ain’t Nothing To It But To Do It: The Determination By Shareeka Cue

There are moments in life when everything seems to stack against you. Grief. Responsibility. Exhaustion. In those moments, the path forward can feel impossible to see, let alone walk. For Shareeka Cue, that path did not just feel difficult. At times, it felt unimaginable. And yet, step by step, she kept going.

At 39 years old, Shareeka is a mother of eight, a full-time worker, and now, a graduate of Northeastern Technical College’s Associate Degree Nursing program. Her journey into nursing was not sparked by a single moment, but by a lifetime of observation, love, and determination.

Growing up, Shareeka watched the people she loved most navigate serious health challenges. Her father endured multiple open-heart surgeries. Her grandmother battled chronic illness. In their home, health was not an abstract concept. It was personal. It shaped how they lived, how they ate, and how they cared for one another.

“My mom completely changed how we ate,” Shareeka recalled. “We didn’t grow up on junk food. Everything was intentional.”

That awareness stayed with her. Years later, while working as a pharmacy technician for eight years, she saw a different side of the same story. She watched patients leave with ten or more medications, managing conditions that had progressed quietly over time.

“I wanted to be part of the change,” she said. “I wanted to help people before it got to that point. Or even if it had, to help them believe it didn’t have to stay that way.”

But deciding to pursue nursing was only the beginning. What followed was a journey marked not just by academic rigor, but by life’s heaviest realities.

Shareeka entered the nursing program while balancing full-time work, sometimes even holding two jobs. At home, she was raising eight children. During this time, she was also navigating a divorce, working to hold her family together while rebuilding her own life.

“School wasn’t the hardest part,” she said. “It was everything else that happened once I started.”

Even in the midst of chaos, she found strength in the people around her. Her mother became a steady source of support. And her 16-year-old son stepped into a role far beyond his years, helping care for his younger siblings, making sure homework was done, meals were prepared, and routines stayed intact while his mother worked and studied.

“He sacrificed a lot,” Shareeka said. “He didn’t have to, but he did.” Still, the most difficult chapter of her journey came when her father’s health began to decline. As his condition worsened, Shareeka found herself balancing school, work, motherhood, and caregiving. Days were filled with responsibilities. Nights were filled with worry. And in the back of her mind, she knew what was coming.

“We all knew,” she said quietly. “That was the hardest part.”

When her father passed away, the weight of that loss was overwhelming. Sitting on his porch the night before an exam, she questioned how she could possibly move forward.

And then she heard his voice.

“Ain’t nothing to it but to do it.”

It was a phrase he had told her countless times throughout her life. Simple. Direct. Unwavering. In that moment, it became everything. The next morning, still carrying her grief, Shareeka showed up and took her exam.

“I didn’t think I could do it,” she said. “But I knew he would want me to.”

She passed.

From that point on, those words became her anchor. In moments of doubt, exhaustion, and fear, she returned to them again and again. Just do it. That quiet resilience carried her through the remainder of her program. Through long nights, early mornings, and days that seemed to stretch beyond what felt possible.

Along the way, she was not alone. Her sister, who was pursuing her own nursing path, became both a source of encouragement and a partner in the journey. The two leaned on each other through exams, stress, and shared determination. In a full-circle moment, Shareeka had the honor of pinning her sister at her nursing ceremony.

“That meant everything to me,” she said.

Today, as a graduate preparing to begin her career in the ICU, Shareeka is stepping into a future that once felt uncertain. “It still feels surreal,” she admitted. “Sometimes it doesn’t feel real yet.” But what does feel real is the impact of her journey. “The biggest thing for me is knowing that my story has inspired someone else,” she said. “That’s what means the most.” For her children, her accomplishment is more than a degree. It is a living example of perseverance, sacrifice, and strength.

“They’ve seen everything,” she said. “And I want them to know they can do anything. If I can do it, anybody can.”

Looking ahead, Shareeka plans to continue her education and pursue her long-term goal of becoming a midwife. Her passion for helping others, combined with her lived experience, is already shaping the kind of nurse she will become.

Her advice to others walking a similar path is simple, but powerful. “It won’t last forever,” she said. “You can do anything for a little while. Just get started. That’s the hardest part.”

And if she could say one thing to her father today?

“I’d tell him I did it,” she said. “And I’m okay.”

In a journey defined by love, loss, and relentless determination, Shareeka Cue did more than earn a degree. She built a future for her family. She honored her father’s legacy. And she became a source of inspiration for everyone who hears her story.

Leadership Academy Prepares Emerging Leaders for the Future of Higher Education

Leadership in higher education requires more than managing daily operations. It requires vision, adaptability, strategic thinking, and the ability to inspire others through change. To help strengthen the next generation of institutional leaders, the Leadership Academy was created as a professional development program designed specifically for mid-level managers including Assistant Vice Presidents, Deans, Directors, and Department Heads.

Aligned with the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Competencies for Community College Leaders (4th Edition), the Academy provides a comprehensive curriculum that equips participants with the leadership tools needed to navigate the evolving landscape of higher education. Throughout the program, participants explored topics ranging from artificial intelligence and workforce development to strategic planning, governance, student success, and communication.

The Academy emphasized practical leadership development through both in-person and virtual sessions held between October 2025 and May 2026. Participants gained insight into leadership goals and AACC competencies, examined the growing impact of AI on education and leadership, and explored how industry demands continue to reshape educational pathways and institutional priorities.

Sessions throughout the year focused on leadership skills for modern challenges, budget and risk management, effective communication, governance and policy, and student success initiatives. Participants also engaged with experienced system leaders to gain valuable perspectives on higher levels of responsibility and organizational leadership.

The Academy also encouraged collaboration and reflection on academic partnerships, strategic planning, and communication strategies that support institutional growth and student achievement. By combining real-world leadership discussions with practical application, the program provided participants with tools they can immediately apply within their roles.

Northeastern Technical College Participants
Northeastern Technical College was proudly represented in the Leadership Academy by Vangelia Evans, Enrollment Center Specialist; Meirisa Coleman, Enrollment Center Coordinator; and the Dean of Enrollment Management and K-12 Services. Their participation reflects the college’s ongoing commitment to professional growth, leadership development, and student-centered excellence.

The program concluded with a graduation ceremony in May 2026, recognizing the dedication and accomplishments of participants who completed the Academy. As higher education continues to evolve, programs like the Leadership Academy play a vital role in preparing leaders who are ready to guide institutions through future opportunities and challenges.

Born Ready: How Nova Helped Her Mom Cross the Finish Line

The morning sickness was the hardest part. Not the exams. Not the 5 a.m. drives to clinical rotations. Not the months of balancing nursing school, a full-time management position, and preparing for a baby. For Amya Smith, it was simply getting out of bed each morning, feeling every bit of what her body was going through, and choosing to show up anyway. She did, every single time.

This spring, at just 21 years old, Smith graduated from the Associate Degree Nursing program, completing both her LPN and Associate Degree Nursing credentials. She accomplished it while working full time as an LPN unit manager. She accomplished it while pregnant. And she celebrated her pinning ceremony on May 7th, just one day after giving birth to her daughter, Nova, on May 6th.

“It has meant a whole lot to me,” Smith says of graduating while becoming a new mother. “Being pregnant while in nursing school gave me another motivation to keep going. When she gets older, I can tell her all about it, and she can be proud of me.”

When Smith first learned she was pregnant during the program, panic came first. Then determination followed close behind. She says the experience forced her to become more organized, more disciplined, and more intentional with her time than ever before. Instead of allowing the pregnancy to derail her goals, she built structure into every corner of her life so she would not become overwhelmed or lose focus.

Still, the final semester pushed her to her limits. Between clinicals, preceptorship hours, preparing for a baby shower, and getting her home ready for Nova’s arrival, the pressure was constant. Her preceptorship in the OR at Scotland Hospital demanded long stretches of standing and walking, all while heavily pregnant and exhausted. Many mornings started before sunrise.

“I’d wake up at 5 o’clock in the morning getting ready for clinicals thinking, ‘I just can’t do it today,’” Smith says. “But then I’d go through with it anyway. It taught me to never give up.”

Those difficult days became survivable because of the people around her. Her mother became her steady source of reassurance, someone she says she could call for anything when she needed encouragement to keep moving forward. Her boyfriend stood beside her through every late-night study session, long shift, and emotional moment. Her classmates, Laney and Lavonia, checked on her every day, making sure she was okay and reminding her she was not carrying the weight alone.

“It’s good having that extra support from classmates who know part of what you’re going through,” she says. “They kept me straight and motivated.”

Her faith also became an anchor during the hardest moments. Smith says prayer and trusting the Lord helped her maintain her spirit through exhaustion, uncertainty, and stress.

“I feel like I can do all things with the Lord as He guides me through any tough situation,” she says. “Just keeping my spirit up and knowing the Lord allowed me to get through this.”

Long before becoming a mother herself, Smith considered labor and delivery nursing. At one point she stepped away from the idea, unsure if it was truly the path she wanted. But after experiencing childbirth firsthand, her perspective changed completely.

“Seeing how helpful all the nurses were to me and just the overall experience made me want to veer toward labor and delivery again,” she says.

Now she finds herself drawn between labor and delivery nursing and the ICU, inspired both by the intensity of critical care and the compassion she experienced as a patient herself. Whatever specialty she chooses, Smith will bring something many new nurses have not yet experienced: the memory of being the patient on the other side of the bed, scared, exhausted, emotional, and deeply grateful for every calm and caring presence in the room.

Looking back, Smith says one of the accomplishments she is most proud of is simply surviving that final semester.

“Getting through my preceptorship and clinicals and making it through the last semester,” she says with a laugh. “It about took me out.”

But through every challenge, Nova became her reason to keep going. Smith hopes one day her daughter understands just how much she inspired her during this chapter of life.

“I would do it all over again a thousand times for the same outcome,” she says. “She kept me motivated throughout the whole thing.”

When asked what she would say to herself on the first day of nursing school, Smith’s answer sounded less like advice and more like a letter written for anyone struggling to keep moving forward.

“You are about to enter a new chapter of your life,” she says. “There’s going to be many struggles and many times you doubt yourself. There will be tests that make you question if this is really worth it. But just continue moving forward, because the reward at the end will always be greater than what you went through.”

One word defines the journey for her: perseverance.

“That describes it all,” she says simply.

Smith plans to stay local after graduation, close to the family and support system that carried her through one of the most demanding seasons of her life. Nova is doing well, and Smith describes her daughter with the kind of tenderness only a brand-new mother can fully understand.

“She’s precious,” she says softly.

For any pregnant student or young mother questioning whether she can handle nursing school, or any educational journey at all, Smith’s message is clear: go for it.

“You can do anything you put your mind to,” she says. “Just because you’re pregnant, younger, older, or feel different from everybody else doesn’t matter. As long as you stay motivated and remember it’s for a bigger purpose, it’ll all be worth it in the end.”

She’s 21. She’s a nursing graduate. She’s a mother. And her daughter already has quite a story to grow into.
