Last Friday at the Textron Service Center in Wichita, I had the privilege of closing two deals on the same day for our client—facilitating a sale of their Citation M2 and the purchase of a replacement CJ3+. Helping clients choose the right aircraft is always rewarding, especially when upgrading from the same capable jet family.

Both are strong light jets with different missions. If you're deciding which fits your flying style or business needs, here’s a quick breakdown:

Citation M2: The Perfect First Jet

The M2 is a leading entry-level jet, quick, efficient, and manageable for owner-pilots upgrading from turboprops or high-performance pistons.

Specs at a Glance:

•Max Range: ~1,550 NM
•Cruise Speed: 404 KTAS
•Seats: 4–6
•Takeoff Distance: ~3,210 ft
•Engines: Williams FJ44-1AP-21
•Avionics: Garmin G3000

The M2 stands out for its accessibility and modern jet affordability. It’s fast enough for regional and medium cross-country trips, yet economical for private owners and smaller companies.

Citation CJ3+: A Step Up in Range and Payload

The CJ3+ adds range, space, and payload, great for buyers needing more mission and passenger flexibility.

Specs at a Glance:

•Max Range: ~2,040 NM
•Cruise Speed: 416 KTAS
•Seats: 6–9
•Takeoff Distance: ~3,180 ft
•Engines: Williams FJ44-3A
•Avionics: Garmin G3000

This model is favored by charter operators and corporate flight departments for its efficient performance and expanded capability. It’s also a top choice for owner-pilots looking to fly longer legs, like coast-to-coast (with a fuel stop) or nonstop from the Midwest to almost all of the continental US.

In my experience, CJ3+ buyers are often upgrading from earlier CJ models or moving up after gaining experience in lighter jets or turboprops.

How to Choose Between the Two

Choosing between the M2 and CJ3+ often comes down to mission profile, passenger load, and budget.

✅ Choose the M2 if:

•You’re stepping into your first jet.
•Most trips are 800–1,200 NM with 2–4 people.
•You plan to self-fly regularly.
•You value simplicity and lower operating costs.

✅ Choose the CJ3+ if:

•You regularly carry 5+ passengers or larger amounts luggage.
•You need more range for business or leisure trips.
•You prefer a spacious, client-friendly cabin.
•You want something that grows with your flying needs.

For this client, the upgrade came with a growing need for longer range and payload capability while still staying in the familiar and somewhat similar Citation model.

Conclusion:

Cessna’s Citation M2 and CJ3+ are among the most respected light jets in the world—and for good reason. Each fills its niche exceptionally well. As someone who just guided our client through that decision, I can tell you: there’s no bad choice, just the right jet for the right mission.

If you’re evaluating which Citation model is right for you, I’d be happy to share insights, market data, and real-world performance comparisons. Let’s get you headed to your aviation goals in 2025.
