Every year, there are 5 academic prizes awarded by the entire faculty. This year, CMS and Sociology major Celia Long received the Eugene B. Casey Medal. This prize is "awarded to a senior woman voted by the faculty to be outstanding in the qualities of scholarship, character, leadership, and campus citizenship." Inside and outside the classroom, Celia contributed to the vitality of our campus community. In a graduating class full of impressive scholars and citizens, Celia is an outstanding representation of the attributes recognized by this award.

In addition to our departmental awards, CMS students were honored with campus-wide awards. This year, Darius Kesey was awarded the Holstein Program in Ethics Senior Award. This prize is given to the graduating senior "who has leveraged their chosen field of study into ethical action both inside and beyond the classroom." Throughout his time at Washington College, Darius's work demonstrated his ability to engage a range of tools and strategies to create culturally-attuned work attentive to fundamental ethical questions.

This year, the CMS Outstanding Scholar Award went to Faye Dorman. Faye has done consistently excellent work as a CMS major, starting in her first semester at WC when she enrolled in CMS 101. Faye took a broad range of courses, including multiple internships and study abroad experiences where Faye applied her CMS knowledge in new contexts. Unsurprisingly, her SCE also reflected her interdisciplinary understanding of the field, bringing together her economics and CMS training to analyze marketing produced by Japanese nuclear energy companies. Faye was a supportive peer and a great contributor to her CMS classes.

Congratulations, Faye!

This year, the CMS Senior Capstone Award went to Darius Kesey. Darius's SCE, "Pampachanakuy: Exploring the Role of Photography Within Post-Conflict Memory Construction in Peru," was an incredibly ambitious and successful project that included intensive research and original photography and interviews. A selection of Darius's work was featured in a solo public exhibition last month at the Kent Cultural Alliance.

Congratulations, Darius!

Join us tonight for the final film in this year’s film series, Get Out. We’ve spent this academic year exploring the theme of resistance. Jordan Peele’s 2017 film follows the story of Chris Washington as he visits his girlfriend’s family, the Armitages. As the film progresses, Chris discovers the dark truth about this family and work to resist outside control of his mind and body.

The New York Times describes the film as “exhilaratingly smart and scary” and The New Yorker describes Peele’s work as a “radical cinematic vision of the world through a Black man’s eyes.” You won’t want to miss it!

Please join CMS and Intercultural Affairs tonight for a WC Film Series special event. We’ll be watching The Lavender Scare, a documentary following the concerted campaign— initiated in 1953 by President Eisenhower—to identify and fire gay and le***an federal employees.

The screening will begin with an introduction by Tina Jones from the Delmarva Pride Center. This documentary is a perfect addition to the series on resistance that’s been running this academic year. Be sure to join us today and again next Thursday as we close out the series with Get Out.
