Romance Languages and Literatures at UChicago Department of Romance Languages & Literatures at University of Chicago We offer graduate programs in French, Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Studies, and Italian.

The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures embraces multiple disciplinary and linguistic traditions reflecting the theoretical diversity of our fields. We also provide a number of configurations for undergraduate study, including majors and minors in the languages, literatures, and cultures of Italy, France and the Francophone world, and Iberia and Latin America.

Join us next Monday, April 27 for a performance by Gabriella Ghermandi!

Gabriella Ghermandi is a singer, performer, novelist and short-story writer, who uses storytelling and live performance to reach diverse audiences and foster mutual empathy. She was born and raised in Addis Ababa to an Italian father and Ethiopian mother. She later relocated to Bologna, Italy. Ghermandi is also the creator and lead singer of The Atse Tewodros Project, an artistic collaboration between Ethiopian and Italian musicians.

We are saddened to share the news that Paolo Cherchi, Professor Emeritus of Italian and Spanish Literatures, passed away on April 4, 2026.

Paolo, born in 1937, in Oschiri (Sassari), Sardinia, was a philologist of international renown and prodigious productivity, and a member of the Accademia dei Lincei, the highest academic honor in Italy. He received his laurea in lettere from the University of Cagliari in 1962, and his PhD in Romance Languages from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1966. He taught at the University of Chicago from 1965 to 2003. He will be dearly missed.
