HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH!
As we celebrate black history month we continue to highlight and celebrate black history!!!
Black History Spotlight: Dr. Lester Carter
Dr. Lester Carter was one of the longest-serving
African American pharmacists. After joining the
U.S. Navy and serving in the Korean War, Dr.
Carter enrolled in pharmacy school at Creighton
University in Omaha. He was the only African
American in a class of 42 and would go on to
become the school's first African American
graduate in 1958. The Rexall drug store chain
hired him to work at a pharmacy in Omaha, but
asked that he work in the back, out of public view,
because the store he was assigned to was in an
upscale white neighborhood, and managers were
concerned about what people might think. After 6
years of compounding for Rexall, Carter refined
his craft compounding prescriptions. He became
friends with a Black pharmacy owner in Nebraska
who told him about a job opening in Milwaukee.
While visiting the city, Carter looked for his own
store and heard about the pharmacy on 24th and
Burleigh. When the owners retired, he purchased
the location. He went on to own the only black
pharmacy in Milwaukee for 47 years. Dr. Carter
recently passed away at the age of 90 on Jan. 31,
2022.
