Today, exactly 20 years later, we remember the thousands of lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the heroes who bravely responded that day.
Like many in New York City that day, Kim Papa Salvesen, Zeta Beta-Dartmouth, raced out of downtown Manhattan fighting through debris and smoke. At the time Kim was working on Wall Street and her boyfriend (now husband) was a New York City firefighter. Kim was unable to contact her boyfriend for a day and he then spent several months cleaning up Ground Zero.
"The World Trade Center had a lot of memories for me. My dad worked on the 45th floor of World Trade Center until 1999, and I loved his view of the Statue of Liberty from his windows. But for me, I think of the most impactful outcomes of September 11 was the sense of unity and patriotism that came immediately after. It was amazing, and it was inspiring to see what we as a country can do if we can all come together."
Kim was serving as the New York City alumnae chapter president and was overwhelmed by the support she felt from her Delta Gamma sisters. "When I first reached my apartment, my answering machine was full of messages from concerned sisters near and far. I even had messages from alumnae that I had never met."
