Today, DePaul announces that a $30 million gift from alumni Robert Clifford (BUS ’73, JD ’76, LLD ’03) and Joan Clifford (COE ’72) will usher in a new era for the College of Law. The gift will expand opportunities for students and faculty and elevate DePaul University College of Law's national reputation for excellence in legal education. In recognition of the gift, the college will be renamed the Robert A. Clifford College of Law.

Robert Clifford is celebrating his 50th reunion this month with College of Law classmates. He is a DePaul Life Trustee, prominent Chicago trial lawyer, and founder and senior partner of Clifford Law Offices PC, a premier Chicago law firm concentrating in personal injury and wrongful death litigation.

“This extraordinary gift honors Bob’s distinguished career while shaping the future of legal education at DePaul for generations to come,” said DePaul President Robert L. Manuel. “It builds on the College of Law’s proud history and strengthens its position as a leader in preparing exceptional lawyers who lead with integrity, serve their communities and advance justice. I am deeply grateful to Bob and Joan for their remarkable generosity, their longstanding partnership and their unwavering belief in DePaul’s Catholic and Vincentian mission.”

We’re welcoming University of Chicago Law Professor Curtis Bradley as our 2026 Enlund Scholar-in-Residence. His lecture, “Glossing the Foreign Affairs Constitution,” will examine how more than 230 years of congressional and executive branch practices have shaped foreign affairs law, with connections to current debates over tariffs, Greenland and Iran.

Kevin Michael Coyne (JD ’00) recently joined Buchalter, LLP, as special counsel in the firm’s Chicago office. Kevin concentrates his practice on commercial real estate transaction and land use. In addition, he serves as chair of the International Council of Shopping Center’s government relations committee for the state of Illinois. In August, he was named to Crain’s Chicago Business’ 2026 Notable Leaders in Accounting, Consulting & Law list.

Frank M. Clark (BUS ’72, JD ’76, LLD ’04) was awarded the DuSable Chicago Legacy Award presented by World Business Chicago during its 2026 Chicago International Gala. Named in honor of Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, the award celebrates individuals who make a lasting contribution to Chicago’s cultural, economic and social fabric. Frank is the retired chairman & CEO of ComEd and is a DePaul University Life Trustee.

Last week, DePaul Law students and alumni joined the Office of Professional & Career Development, the Center for Public Interest Law and the Public Interest Law Association for an engaging discussion with the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) about paid public interest summer internships.

PILI works to engage, inspire and empower those advancing equal access to justice. Through its Law Student Internship Program, PILI funds law students working at public interest law organizations in Cook County and across Illinois, while providing educational, networking and mentoring opportunities.

Panelists Alex Schumacher, PILI program associate; Katie Nail, a third-year student and 2026 PILI intern at Chicago Volunteer Legal Services; and alumnus Michael Hoyt (JD`20), managing attorney with the Children’s Protection Project at National Immigrant Justice Center and a PILI alum, shared insights from their experiences. They discussed internship highlights and how law students can help legal aid organizations expand access to justice and serve more clients.

Student in DePaul’s Croak Community Legal Clinic partnered with CARPLS to support exonerees at ABC Reentry’s inaugural Wrongful Conviction Day Resource Fair & Celebration, hosted by Loevy & Loevy. The event brought together organizations and professionals to connect returning citizens with legal assistance, housing, employment, health care, mental health support and other essential reentry resources. DePaul Law students helped prepare and execute powers of attorney, contributing to this collaborative effort to support exonerees as they rebuild their lives. ,

Congratulations to DePaul Law Professor Valerie Koch, director of the Mary & Michael Jaharis Health Law Institute, on her selection as a 2026–2027 Wicklander Fellow!

Koch was selected for her research exploring informed legal consent and related questions in medical ethics. Her proposal was recognized for its potential to inform important discussions beyond academia at the intersection of law, ethics, healthcare and professional practice.

The fellowship, awarded by DePaul’s Institute for Business & Professional Ethics, provides financial support for her research and opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary scholarship and dialogue on pressing ethical issues.
