The Justice Studies department hosted the Illinois Human Rights Commission today at the main campus. The commissioners spoke about what the IHRC does and all the free services they offer. Special thanks to Professor Maurice McFarlin for bringing his JUST 313: Prisons and Jails class to this very informative and engaging presentation!

Stateville Speaks interns and Justice Studies faculty spent the last few days helping write holiday postcards to Stateville Speaks subscribers, most of whom are incarcerated. We want those who are system affected to know there are people on the outside fighting for justice every day, and they are not forgotten.

Please follow Stateville Speaks on FB and IG for updates on the important work this organization does.

Update on FALL 2020 Justice Studies & CAST courses:

All CAST and Justice Studies classes will be either Remote or Online. Currently the schedule of classes on neiuport lists most courses as face-to-face but most will be changed in the near future to remote or online.

Remote classes are listed with a set date/time. This means there may be virtual meetings of the class using zoom, google meets, etc. (synchronous instruction).

Online classes are not listed as having a set date and time to meet (these are asynchronous). Students complete work following the internal class schedule noted on the syllabus (e.g., submit assignments, take tests, participate in online discussions by the courses’ deadlines).

Courses with internship requirements: Internships will not be required and we will be flexible in order to help students graduate. If students find virtual internships, that is welcome, but not required. Contact the course Professor for further details

Please check out these two recent scholarship opportunities for students:

The George Floyd Social Justice Scholarship will establish a permanent resource for NEIU students, the majority of whom are people of color, who are dedicated to pursuing leadership roles in the multifaceted, intersectional work of social justice. Please visit https://www.neiu.edu/alumni-and-giving/giving/give-neiu/foundation-scholarships/george-floyd-social-justice-scholarship for more information.

NEIU Social Justice Leadership Housing Award is a new leadership program that provides free housing for students who positively impact their university, career and communities. Students participating in the program will be given one year's free housing in The Nest, our on-campus apartments, while taking a first-year seminar during their first semester and while participating in a series of leadership workshops during their second semester. This program is effective starting today. Please visit http://neiu.edu/housingaward for more information.

Justice Studies students are encouraged to apply for both these awards

IMPORTANT COVID-19 NOTICE: Visit neiu.edu/coronavirus for information about remote learning, health resources, job opportunities and more.

Justice Studies Department policy for students who will take JUST 350-Field Work Seminar in summer 2020:

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact on NEIU students being prevented from completing in-person internship hours, the Justice Studies Department has decided to modify the requirement that students do 180 volunteer hours in an agency/ community setting. Instead, students taking JUST 350 in summer 2020 will be able to work remotely or online in researching non-profit organizations and governmental agencies that promote social justice or that have social justice initiatives or programs. The JUST 350 class for Summer 2020 may incorporate development of practical skills that are useful in the field, such as grant proposal writing, interviewing, and social research.

Please reach out to your JUST 345 and JUST 350 Professors, or the Justice Studies Chair for questions or concerns. We understand these are difficult times for all of you and want to support you in your educational goals
