Arts, Science and Culture Initiative - UChicago

ASCI is looking for graduate students interested in collaborating across arts and sciences. Each team may consist of two or three graduate students, with at least one in the arts/humanities and one from the sciences, who work together over the course of five months to investigate a subject from the perspectives offered by each of their disciplines. Selected teams will receive up to $3,000 in grant support.

Since then, participants have been using those funds to conduct scientific research or commission new artworks or develop programming and exhibitions. Forthcoming presentations will cover a sweeping timespan, with works including medieval Islamic illustrated books, Mesoamerican ceramics and textiles, ancient Aboriginal drawings as well as films, videos, computer art and artificial intelligence technology."

On May 9, the Getty announced the next edition of Pacific Standard Time, as well as a rebrand and project updates. The SoCal-wide multidisciplinary arts initiative, debuting in September 2024, will blend art and science.

Work to organize, describe, and make accessible the papers of and James Cronin is underway! Projects Archivist Angela Solis recently found this Earth Day-worthy gem in the collection: “To celebrate , it is essential to remember why it was created in the first place. It originally started to raise awareness about environmental issues, but now it is a reminder to invest in and preserve our planet. In Special Collections, taking care of items is always at the forefront of our work to preserve documents and materials!

One collection currently being cared for is the James Cronin Papers. Cronin, a famous University of Chicago Physics Professor and 1980 Nobel Prize winner spent significant time traveling around the world, sharing his research, and appreciating all the world has to offer. At home, he focused on his work and was surrounded by his loving family. Pictured here is a drawing done by his son, Daniel. Cronin saved the fun and well-done drawing of fish and a dolphin.

The animals drawn wouldn’t still exist without the continued efforts of individuals caring for our planet. Just like how someone in special collections takes care of these precious and fun drawings that Cronin’s family saved and donated, we all need to do our part in taking care of our precious earth.”

"Beverly Hill explores the dynamics of rich housewifery by forcing it to adjust to a post-capitalist world. Set ten years after a major economic revolution, this episode follows six housewives, represented by papier mâché rod puppets, who live together in a dilapidated mansion atop Beverly Hill—the last hill left standing in the one-time playground of the rich and famous."

Beverly Hill was partially funded by an ASCI Graduate Collaboration Grant in 2020–21.
