The Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures and the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations of the University of Chicago invite applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Egyptian Archaeology. The appointment would commence on July 1, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter. We welcome applications from specialists in the archaeology of Egypt or Sudan, preferably with expertise in the pharaonic periods. Any methodological or theoretical specialty within this broad geographic and chronological ambit will be considered.

Qualifications
The successful applicant must have completed all requirements for receipt of a PhD in a relevant field by the position start date and will be expected to teach courses in Egyptian archaeology and history as well as in the University’s undergraduate Core Curriculum, to supervise B.A. and M.A. theses and Ph.D. dissertations, and to carry out independent research and publication. Participation in an active field project as director or senior staff member, or otherwise having the ability to provide students with field research opportunities, will be an asset.

Assistant Professor of Egyptology

The Oriental Institute and the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations of the University of Chicago invite applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Egyptology with an expected start date of July 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Qualifications

Applications are welcome from scholars with a research focus in Egyptology. Candidates must be prepared to teach all major phases and scripts of the ancient Egyptian language, and a range of introductory and advanced courses in ancient Egyptian history and culture, as well as courses aimed at a general undergraduate audience. Candidates must also be able to supervise B.A. and M.A. theses and Ph.D. dissertations, and to conduct independent research and publication. Candidates must have completed all requirements for receipt of a Ph.D. prior to the start of the appointment.

Professor Ahmed El Shamsy has taken over for Professor Frank Lewis as the interim department chair for NELC. Professor El Shamsy was just promoted to full professor after 12 years teaching at the University of Chicago. He studies the intellectual history of Islam and earned his PhD from Harvard in 2009. El Shamsy is currently working on a book project about the birth of Sunnism. Congratulations, Professor El Shamsy!

The Chicago Arabic Teachers Council invites you to participate in our Spring 2022 workshop, "Harnessing Authentic Materials and Technology for Engaging Media Arabic Courses" with Dr. Sonia Shiri (University of Arizona).

Date: Wednesday, June 15, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM CST

Location: Lincoln Park High School, 2001 N Orchard St, Chicago, IL 60614

The workshop will feature practical insights on using authentic Arabic media in the classroom. A light breakfast, coffee, and lunch from Cedar Palace restaurant will be served. Attendees will receive Certificates of Participation and CPDU credits (if applicable) for participation.

Speaker:

Dr. Sonia Shiri is Associate Professor, Middle East Language Programs Coordinator and Director of the Arabic Flagship Program at the University of Arizona. In 2019, she became Director of the Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA). Her research interests and publications focus on Second Language Acquisition and Teaching, languages in contact, study abroad, and CALL. She is a faculty member of the Second Language Acquisition & Teaching (SLAT) Interdisciplinary Graduate Program.

Before joining MENAS, Dr. Sonia Shiri coordinated the Arabic Program at the University of California, Berkeley, taught Arabic at Oxford University where she was a Senior Fellow at St. Antony’s College, and held a Research Fellowship at the Center for Women and Gender at Stanford University. From 2009-2012, she acted as Senior Academic Director of the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS), overseeing curriculum development, program administration, and teacher training in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, and Oman. During 2002-2005, she served as the Academic and Outreach Coordinator for the Berkeley Language Center.

In 2007, Dr. Sonia Shiri received UC Berkeley’s Faculty Award for Outstanding Mentorship of Graduate Student Instructors” then CALICO’s “Access to Language Education Award” in 2008. In 2017, she was a Fellow of the UA Academic Leadership Institute, was nominated in 2016 for the ACTFL Paul Pimsleur Award for Research in Foreign Language Education, and currently serves on the editorial board of the Foreign Language Annals and Critical Multilingualism Studies.
