“Lazing about, surrounded by the trappings of late-night meals and pauses
in conversation, the real and the unreal subtly mesh into a moment that’s as
valuable to the characters as it is impossible.”
Caitlyn Doran is a painter who honors the small, ordinary things of life; for
her, what is very precious yet in most danger of being overlooked are the
everyday encounters between humans, their animals, their objects, and each
other. Caitlyn remixes these moments in fantastic ways to make for the most
effective form of celebration.
The All-Nighter with Rabbits
is a large-scale painting that showcases a
real gathering, but with a new set of characters. Using acrylic, pastel, and
graphite, Caitlyn plays between the lines of the everyday experience to pull
forward what is often left behind, taking inspiration from her own daily life,
past and present. Loved ones and objects from Kanazawa, Moline, Tokyo, and
Chicago casually occupy the same tatami floor, feeling both as familiar and
intimate as it is dream-like.
