The holiday season is a time to rejoice, give thanks, and enjoy time with friends and family. I can't help but think about those in our communities, our nation, and across the globe who instead, are focusing on mere survival. “Witnessing human suffering shaped me; it was formative in helping me think about what social justice looks like and how I might impact people’s lives for the better,” says Diaz, a Loyola University Chicago School of Law lecturer and associate director of the Center for the Human Rights of Children (CHRC).

Loyola selected Diaz as the winner of the 2023 Kolvenbach Award for Engaged Teaching, citing her record of care and attention to the educational and transitional needs of new students.

The Center for Mexico and Central America Columbia University just published a report by CHRC Associate Director, Sarah J. Diaz, JD, LLM, and Loyola University Chicago School of Law student, Jenny Lee, PhD, "Zero Tolerance: Atrocity Crimes against Migrant Families in the United States: An Accountability Framework for Family Separation." It details how family separation under the Trump administration's Zero Tolerance policy was a crime against humanity, and not merely an abuse of power.

"The Trump Administration’s policy of family separation cannot be accepted as a legitimate government immigration policy. Instead, it is imperative for the global community to recognize that the policy of family separation, and the manner in which parent-child separations were carried out, constitute crimes against humanity."
