DePaul Islamic World Studies (IWS)

DePaul Islamic World Studies (IWS) DePaul University's BA in Islamic World Studies This approach to the study of Islam is currently unmatched anywhere else in the United States.

DePaul University’s Islamic World Studies Program grounds students in a study of Islam as a worldview and living reality. The program engages the primary texts, history and cultural traditions in Muslim lands as well as community and regional issues where Muslims are significant minorities. The philosophy of the program is that Islamic Studies is both a study of foundational texts and their interp

reters, and a study of Islam in cultural contexts. Using the methods of interdisciplinary studies, students will not only investigate the major contours of Islam as a world civilization in their introductory coursework, but they will also focus intensively on specific aspects of global Islamic experiences. Included in this coursework are opportunities to take a closer look at the history of Islam in the Middle East, South Asia, Africa and the United States.

In honor of Women's History Month, we screen "Monir." A documentary looking at the life and work of Iranian artist Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, who first garnered attention in the 1970s when she pioneered contemporary forms of geometric mirror works. Monir created an artistic language that was informed by traditional Iranian craft and architecture; formative years spent in New York in the 1940s and 50s and ongoing conversations with some of the 20th century´s most experimental artists were also part of Monir's artistic universe.

The Abrahamic Center for Cultural Education is an art gallery and resource center that explores the intersections between the Abrahamic faiths and provides a more creative and accessible understanding of Islam and Muslims using interdisciplinary methods - located in Downtown Chicago. We are a Core Member of the Chicago Cultural Alliance and a partner with CIS (Communities in Schools Chicago.) ACCE is an initiative of IFANCA (The Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America.)

Sabeel Center, our collaborator, is an Islamic Museum and community space dedicated to the life of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). It features various galleries that illustrate the history and legacy of Islam’s last prophet. The Sabeel Center is a place where visitors can develop a greater understanding of Islamic culture and heritage through the arts, both learned and practiced.

More on "Monir."

Director: Bahman Kiarostami

Langage: Farsi and English, with English subtitles

The film takes an intimate look at the artist's life and her practice and explores how she became one of the most influential artists working in the Middle East. From her method of constructing mirror mosaics to uncovering her past following the political changes in her own country and her subsequent migration to New York, and an artistic renewal sparked by her return to Tehran after an absence of 25 years, it offers an inspiring chronicle of Monir at the peak of her career.

Prior to the film, we will hold an Islamic Art and Tessellation workshop, where we learn a brief history of its origins and create some of our own introductory designs!
