✨✨ Registration is OPEN for Foreign Language Proficiency Certification (FLPC) assessments!

But wait... what even IS an FLPC?

These assessments, FREE of cost to all students in the College and all Graduate students in the Arts and Humanities (only $90 for everyone else), are four-skills language proficiency tests offered by the UChicago Office of Language Assessment at two levels and in up to 13 world languages. The certifications you receive upon passing tell you and others:
-- what you can do with language in the real world
-- how your language ability meets real-life objectives, not a textbook or syllabus
-- how your language ability can serve you in your professional or academic career

🌍 Successful FLPCs earn you Global Honors points: The Practical counts for 2 pts, Advanced for 3 pts!

✈️ The best time to sign up is right now!

👉If you need an SDS accommodation, letters are due to the Office of Language Assessment at time of registration (ideally), or no later than 7 days before the exam.

📢🎉

Throwing back to late May when we said farewell to our last cohort of participants in the Transforming Language Instruction (TLI) Project, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

We were thrilled to see the fruits of the labor undertaken by our incredible colleagues from across the nation and to celebrate the end of an era with our grant. What a way to close out the past near-decade of workshops and projects! A key piece of our mission over the past 9 years, it is hard to believe this project has come to an end. While we will miss seeing everyone in person each summer, and online throughout the year, we hope these partnerships forge ahead and that the transformative projects persevere. In this critical moment for language teaching and learning in the US, these sorts of collaborations are what stoke the fires that keep us burning for the important work we do.

The TLI Project by the numbers:
+ over 200 individuals, at 54 distinct universities
+ 47 different languages, including Less-Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs) like Armenian, Hawaiian, Kurdish, Yiddish, Uyghur and Zulu
+ 14 mini-grants awarded to participants sharing their related work at conferences and symposia
+ 9 years hosting the Shared Less-Commonly Taught Languages Symposium forum, showcasing groundbreaking work by our LCTL instructional colleagues across the nation
+ 9 years of semi-annual workshops for training in the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview
+ countless professional connections and partnerships forged in support of language teaching and learning!

Congratulations, everyone!! 🎉🎉
Keep calm, keep in touch, and keep fighting for language learning!💪👀👀

Last week, US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, announced the administration's renewed attention on visas for international students. In light of this and other recent actions regarding such visas and the presence of international students on US college and university campuses, it is imperative to understand the impacts of these students not only on ground breaking research and the educational experience of domestic students but also the US economy.

NAFSA, the Association of International Educators, which is the world's largest nonprofit association dedicated to international education/exchange and which serves the needs of more than 11,000 members and international educators worldwide at more than 4,300 institutions, recently published their AY 2023-24 data on a state-by-state and congressional district analysis of the economic contributions of international students and their families to the U.S. economy.

From Language Magazine, May 22, 2025:

On May 2, Russell T. Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), sent a letter to Senator Susan Collins, chair of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, outlining President Trump’s recommended changes to discretionary spending for fiscal year (FY) 2026. One of the administration’s recommendations is to eliminate Title III funding—the only federal grant program specifically geared towards supporting English learners (ELs) and recent immigrant students. The following description was provided as justification for the recommended reduction:

"To end overreach from Washington and restore the rightful role of State oversight in education, the Budget proposes to eliminate the misnamed English Language Acquisition program which actually deemphasizes English primacy by funding NGOs and States to encourage bilingualism. The historically low reading scores for all students mean States and communities need to unite—not divide—classrooms using evidence-based literacy instruction materials to improve outcomes for all students.”

Given the far-reaching implications that defunding Title III would have on communities across the country, it is crucial to clear up the baseless claims at the center of the President’s justification for eliminating this discretionary grant program.

🔥 🔥
You’re watching someone give a toast... and they freeze. Or someone sings off-key at karaoke—but doesn’t realize it. Your stomach clenches, your face heats up, and it’s not even you up there.
That feeling? That secondhand cringe that hits like a wave?

Myötähäpeä (Finnish)
😬🇫🇮
It means vicarious embarrassment—the emotional version of covering your eyes with your hoodie and whispering, “oh nooo…”

It’s watching someone bomb a joke, fumble a speech, or overshare on a first date.
It’s not laughing at them—it's flinching for them.

Myötähäpeä reminds us how deeply human we are.
How connected. How empathetic.
Because even when it’s not our moment on stage, our hearts still feel the spotlight.

So the next time secondhand embarrassment hits…
Take a breath.
Send a silent “you got this” into the universe.
And maybe even remember your own moment (we’ve all got a few).
We're all just out here trying not to trip over the mic cord.

What’s your most Myötähäpeä moment—yours or someone else's?

🔥 🔥
