The GWS Department congratulates Professor Manoucheka Celeste for being the recipient of the 2025 National Communication Association's Marsha Houston Award! We celebrate her dedicated and transformative work!

Established by the NCA Executive Committee in 2020 and first conferred in 2021, the award honors Dr. Marsha Houston, noted African American feminist communication scholar who was instrumental in helping raise and duly ensure recognition of the collective academic voices of African American women and other women of color in conventional feminist communication.

Dr. Manoucheka Celeste’s cutting-edge, timely scholarship demonstrates her substantial theoretical, methodological and practical commitment to issues of representational visibility, equity, intersectionality, and global justice. Dr. Celeste’s research poses necessary challenges to Communication Studies scholarship, embracing transdisciplinary perspectives and embodied cultural experiences. Her work, both scholarly and pedagogical, brings together the voices of marginalized groups, powerfully altering how we see the importance of such groups in communication theorizing. Dr. Celeste genuinely values and supports her mentees, especially when they’re facing daunting challenges. This generosity of spirit and lasting impact on the lives of others embody the ideals of Dr. Houston’s legacy.

Urbanisms of the Global South Seminar Series
Being a Public Woman: Streets, Cars, Cries,
and the Shifting Calculus of Moral Accountability in Iran

Date: October 6, 2025
Time: 3:00-4:30pm
Location: CUPPA Hall, Conference Room 110

Join Dr. Norma Moruzzi, Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies and Political Science, to discuss how women’s presence in postrevolutionary Iran is contested not just by whether they appear in public space, but by how they appear. Variations in hejab and bodily comportment—from women in chadors in bazaars to cosmopolitan styles of transnational independence—mark gendered claims to urban space that face harassment, violence, and state “social security” measures. Despite these threats, Iranian women persist, confronting aggressors and demanding their public and political freedoms.

Dr. Moruzzi will be joined by commentator Dr. Brenda Parker, Associate Professor of Urban Planning and Policy.

Hosted by the College of Urban Planning and Policy Affairs (CUPPA).

How does debt shape society? This talk will look at the case of Argentina, where household debt has been deployed and moralized to create the conditions for far-right authoritarianism. By looking at how debt, and particularly the concept of "indebtedness to live" has consolidated the precarity of labor, Dr. Gago will also demonstrate how the stabilization of debt as a model of social reproduction has contributed to state antifeminism.

Verónica Gago is one of the most prominent feminists of our time. A professor of social sciences at the University of Buenos Aires and the University of San Martín, her publications include A Feminist Reading of Debt (2021, with Luci Cavallero) and Neoliberalism from below: Popular Pragmatics and Baroque Economies (2017).

Co-sponsored by the UIC Departments of Anthropology, Latin American and Latino Studies, and Gender and Women’s Studies.

The UIC Gender & Women's Studies Program would light to highlight the recent Truthout op-ed of Drs. Anna Guevarra & Gayatri Reddy, and the Chicago Tribune op-ed of Dr. Barbara Ransby. More than ever, we need to amplify feminist voices and our efforts towards liberation. Thank you Dr. Guevarra, Dr. Reddy, and Dr. Ransby for leading by example!

In “Chicago Hospital’s Closure Is a Canary in the Coal Mine for Corporatized Health Care," Drs. Anna Guevarra & Gayatri Reddy stress how the closure of a community safety net signals the corporatization of health care via the role of private equity firms. Discussing the recent closing of the Weiss Memorial Hospital, Drs. Guevarra & Reddy underscored that "the story of Weiss Memorial Hospital is a classic illustration of the corporatization of health care and the disadvantages of private equity acquisition of hospitals — always to the detriment of the public, especially vulnerable poor and communities of color."

In “Our mayor is standing on the right side of history. Chicago should stand with him,” Dr. Barbara Ransby provides historical contextualization for the federal government's current targeting of Chicago and calls for real investment in public safety. She urges the need for "resources, support, unity and a little bit of optimism."
