Student Center for Science Engagement

Student Center for Science Engagement The SCSE is a warm, friendly space at NEIU, where students gather to study and engage in science. The SCSE staff members are sensitive to student concerns.

Central to the mission of the SCSE is the support of students in the challenges they face in their academic and career development. In particular, the SCSE assists students interested in or majoring in the following disciplines:

* Biology
* Chemistry
* Computer Science
* Earth Science
* Environmental Science
* Mathematics
* Physics
* Psychology

Since the Center’s establishment in 2009, NEIU has

made significant progress in recruiting undergraduate students to prepare them for research and health careers. Our overriding aim is to serve the diverse community of students for which NEIU is known. Our approachable advisors are keen to offer advice on school, career, and life issues as they impact educational and professional paths. The Center assists students in developing relationships with NEIU faculty, as well as local research-intensive institutions and government agencies. The Field Museum and the USDA are two of our partner institutions. At the Center, you will also find a selection of science magazines and articles on noteworthy scientific discoveries, as well as a science book
exchange, and a battery-recycling center. For comprehensive professional advising and a fun place to engage in science, this center is essential!

Please help us congratulate Dr. Tom Campbell (biology) and colleagues for their recent publication in Bio Risk Journal!

Dr. Campbell's research team used mosses and pXRF
spectrometry to study air pollution around Chicago, IL. They found that urbanization was correlated with metal particulate matter, specifically iron. This study warrants the need for future studies as moss is low-cost, for monitoring particulate matter in the air. This is important because air pollution is one of the single largest environmental causes of premature death in the world.

Former SCSE Summer Research Student co-authors of this paper include: Nkosi Evans, Kate Peltz, Glenn Simpson, Emily Erazo, Kage Guare, Agnetta Krechner, Estefania Long, Isaac Oguike, Kimberly Rice, and Amanda Zinke.

We are so proud of our research students who are actively contributing to research! Great job!

Dr. Emily Booms (Biology) and colleagues published a paper that reviewed risk factors for early-onset colorectal cancer.

The article shows the importance of chronic psychosocial stress leading to tumorigenesis, and emphasize that more work needs to be done to assess stress as a risk factor in cancer.

This work is truly important and we are proud of our faculty that are a part of impactful research.
