It’s been a heck of a ride! Dr. Sara Sherman defended her dissertation two weeks ago, was hooded today, and these two had a blast following up with lunch and escape room jaunt with her family! Sara’s going to be up to amazing things at Colorado Anschutz this fall in the leading international Linda Crnic Institute of Down Syndrome. This makes the end of an era as Dr. Baynard and Fernhall’s students have all been seen through to their respective graduations. Keep it real UIC and the most awesome IPL. ❤️🎓🧬

Super proud of our newest PhD defending his dissertation today—Dr. Brooks Hibner! He presented on ventricular-vascular coupling and exercise in multiple sclerosis and did a superb job on the project from begnning to end! We are so proud! In about one month he’ll start as a new Clincial Asst. Professor in the Dept of Kinesiology & Nutrition as the inaugural Director of the new MS concentration in clinical exercise physiology that I helped develop and few years ago. I couldn’t think of anyone better to take on that role!!! 🍾🩺😎🍾🩺

Mr. Brooks Hibner is the 2023 North American Artery annual meeting WINNER of the trainee oral abstract presentation! He worked incredibly hard and it so paid off! Next up, his dissertation defense in a month’s time!

The lab has been hopping lately! Here's the latest and greatest: Brooks, Natalia, & Sara have all completed data collection on their dissertations; Natalia set for a June defense; Brooks set for July; Sara will be in the Fall; Brooks accepted Clinical Asst. Prof position as Director of the new MS in Clinical Ex Phys concentration in the Dept (Aug start date); Sara interviewing for post-doc soon; all three rocked their posters at the recent American Physiological Society's Summit meeting; AND.... Natalia getting married in ~3 weeks! A busy, busy crew! So proud of each every one of these senior PhD students.

Ms. Natalia Lima is one step closer to earning her PhD with a great dissertation proposal meeting today. Stay tuned for a project examining the role of blood flow and mechanical compressions in influencing peripheral arterial stiffness. 😎

The lab had a great time hosting Ms. Tanya Romero, from my alma mater, during June! She was exposed to various aspects of research, helped our team get ready for upcoming projects, and saw a great bit of Chicago to boot!

Catching up on our recent publications from the lab, here is your 3rd installment for the week! This was a fun collaboration with a long-time colleague from Portugal where we have what we believe is now one of the largest data sets involving individuals with Down syndrome and exercise responses.
