NEIU Earth Science The Earth Science Dept of Northeastern Illinois University is on Facebook! Students, alumni, faculty

08/02/2022

Happy Tuesday, everyone!

This week, we are going to be featuring some of our SCSE peer tutors in a special Tutor Spotlight series. This is a chance to get to know our tutors and a little about their backgrounds.

First up is our Earth Science tutor, Katharine Izzo. Katharine writes:

"I first came to NEIU in the fall of 2006 right out of high school. I left after 2 years to travel and find a passion. I came back full time in 2018 as an Earth Science major, with the goal of becoming a meteorologist. I love the Earth and can only hope to learn and understand everything about it, by traveling and getting as many degrees as I can.

Ps. I love pumpkins, mountains, glaciers and the beach….

- Katharine"

If you would like to contact Katharine for a tutoring appointment, email [email protected].

Thank you, Katherine! You ROCK 😁

Hot-off-the-press JOB POSTING from the USEPA! They are accepting applications from recent graduates and current students, as long as you are going to graduate within 9 months. *THE DEADLINE IS THIS FRIDAY, FEB 7!*

"We have posted a position opening for an Environmental Engineer or Physical Scientist, GS-07 or GS-9, to specialize in air pollution matters in the Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Division in EPA’s Chicago office. We are seeking bright, diverse, highly motivated, and qualified candidates for this position who are eager to help protect the environment.

https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/558310100

"The position is as an inspector/enforcement officer for air pollution regulations under the Clean Air Act. The job involves inspecting and investigating industrial sources of air pollution to find excess emissions, or finding “hot spots” of air pollutants that cause communities to be at risk. When you find such circumstances, you would work to correct violations and decrease risk levels by negotiating with companies for the installation of air pollution control technology. If the negotiations are unsuccessful, you may need to work with the Department of Justice, and/or in-house attorneys in our office to enforce cases through litigation."

Drs. Voglesonger and Sanders took their NEIU 100 class on a field trip to the wastewater reclamation plant today, and look who we found there! Congratulations to Walt Beer (Earth Science 2016), who works as a microbiologist at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. He gave us a demonstration of how he uses microscopes to study living things in wastewater, and he gave the students a little career advice. Thanks, Walt!
