Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Do you know that most of the poor people in our country are working everyday? They are making wages so low that they cannot begin to function in the mainstream of the economic life of our nation. These are facts which must be seen. And it is criminal to have people working on a full-time basis and a full-time job getting part-time income."

In the spirit of this quote, in the following weeks we will be collecting student feedback about on-campus jobs and the minimum wage. If you are a student with at least one on-campus job please fill out this short survey:

This form was created by the Committee on Student Employment at the University of Chicago. "The CSE is collecting information on this and related issues like late Financial Aid announcements and late payment of stipends. We find this issue particularly reprehensible because it seems to have affected students only, and not faculty or administrative staff, which compounds our apprehensions that system-wide negligence is affecting precisely those employees who are least able to leverage the administration and that the University as a whole ought to safeguard the most," --- Claudio Sansone, Chair of CSE

"It might not be a lot to the school, but a lot of students need it to live.”

The new Committee on Student Employment created the website to provide students with a clear source of information on grad student unionization and commonly-asked employment questions.

Good news, our website (http://sg.uchicago.edu/committee-on-student-employment/) is officially done! We'd like to highlight two very important features of our new site:

1.We have an entire section of our website dedicated to giving accurate information about graduate student unionization. Under the tab 'Unionization Info Website' you can find an FAQ, a timeline of graduate student unionization efforts on campus, a history of unionization in the US, and much more information.

2. We also have space for students to submit grievances and complaints about employment (http://sg.uchicago.edu/contact-committee-on-student-employment). The Committee on Student Employment is a student-led group committed to investigating concerns and offering support and resources. All information will be treated as confidential.

We're very excited about this new development! Please don't be afraid to reach out with ideas, concerns or questions. You can email us at: [email protected]

We're the Committee on Student Employment (CSE), a brand new student government committee. CSE is tasked with monitoring and investigating issues related to student employment at the University of Chicago. As it is in its first year of operation, the CSE is looking to set the groundwork for further work, and is chiefly focused on the following projects:

1.Creating and maintaining a Student Employment KnowledgeBase for student-to-student support on matters related to employment. This includes information geared to first years and to student who must work as part of their financial aid package, and an updated website with links to relevant materials.

2.Running a support and employment-related grievance service through our office hours, online email forms, and by directing students to other relevant authorities.

3.Providing clear, student-to-student information on the current campus unionization efforts.

4.Performing a survey of the climate of campus employment and reporting on the results yearly, and through a number of issue-oriented preliminary reports.

Be sure to check out our website: http://sg.uchicago.edu/committee-on-student-employment/ to learn more about our mission and goals for the year.
