For years, Maria Carmona, MBA ’25 (XP-94), watched a close family member struggle with mental health misdiagnoses. Now, she’s working to help other families avoid the years of pain her own experienced.

While in Booth’s Sokolov Executive MBA Program, Carmona founded Kivira, an AI-powered startup focused on improving mental health diagnosis. The platform uses AI and DSM-5 standards to help clinicians identify conditions more accurately and efficiently.

“We’re not just building a tool for primary care,” Carmona says. “We’re building diagnostic infrastructure for the entire healthcare system.”

Jeegar Shah, MBA ’13, says his path to becoming head of applied AI and platform engineering at Atomicwork wasn’t straightforward. It may even seem random—his career has spanned the fields of physics, hardware, AI, consulting, big tech, and startups. But he wouldn’t change a thing. He suggests five-year plans impede exploration.

“In this day and age, when we don’t know what’s happening in the next month, much less in the next five years, that question serves only as a block to your curiosity.”

After two decades at the AI frontier, Jeegar Shah (MBA '13) still thinks that genuine curiosity will always beat a five-year plan.
