Meet Brittany Dushman, a 2L MCHS member!

Brittany, along with her fantastic team members Ben Sheinbein and Aaron Thompson, won the McGee Civil Rights Competition earlier this month. Her favorite parts of Moot Court have been the friendships she’s made and the opportunity to continue developing her oral advocacy skills. Brittany is involved in other extracurriculars at school, including working as a teaching assistant and BARBRI representative. Nonetheless, she describes Moot Court as the most rewarding experience thus far: “Through every practice with my amazing coaches Suzanna and Renee, I learn how to be a better advocate, which will make me a better lawyer!” In her free time, Brittany enjoys spending time with her twin sister, Ashley, playing guitar, and participating in any recreational sport she can find.

Brittany is excited to be an extern at the Northern District of Illinois District Court for the Honorable Judge Charles Kocoras this semester and looks forward to her Summer Associate position at Swanson, Martin & Bell starting in May.

Meet Evelyn! Evelyn is a 2L originally from Northbrook, Illinois. This Spring, Evelyn competed and won the UCLA Cybersecurity Competition alongside Clarice Fisher. In line with this topic, Evelyn is interested in Privacy and Technology law especially in transactional work, having completed an internship at CIBC's Privacy Group and worked as a project manager for Discover Financial Services in the Cybersecurity Group. "Moot Court allows me to dive deep into new areas of law and become comfortable with working through the nuances of a complicated argument. I've gained so many skills which I know will be valuable as I begin my career. I love spending time with my hardworking, brilliant peers that I've met through the program." In addition to MCHS, Evelyn is involved in the Chicago-Kent Law Review, the Honors Scholars Program, Society of Women in Law, Jewish Law Students Association, and the Corporate Law Society. Evelyn looks forward to spending this summer as a Summer Associate at Mayer Brown.

Meet Kayla! Kayla is a 2L Junior Member of MCHS, who competed in this year’s William E. McGee National Civil Rights Moot Court Competition. She is also a leader in Chicago Kent’s chapter of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG). Kayla wants to practice civil rights law, particularly focused on prisoner’s rights, post-conviction relief, and Constitutional claims. She is currently working at the ACLU of Illinois, supporting litigation for criminal justice reform, LGBTQ rights, and police accountability. She lives in Rogers Park with her partner and their two cats, JiJi and Michaelangelo.

Benjamin Levine is a 3L Junior Member of MCHS. He competed last year in the Notre Dame Religious Freedom Tournament alongside Esteban Valtierra where they were semifinalists and won the Best Brief Award. He serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Chicago-Kent Law Review and will join the Financial Markets and Funds group at Katten Muchin Rosenman after graduation. He loves the NFL (and fantasy football), reading, watching horror movies with his wife and dog, and trying different restaurants in Chicago (Yelp Elite since 2022 *wow*).

He will compete alongside David Duran this April in the Touro University Moot Court Competition in Law & Religion. "Moot Court pushes me to think of creative arguments and present them succinctly and effectively. I love the people I've met doing MCHS and I am grateful for the skills I've learned that I will carry into my career."

Meet Nell Riordan, a 2L MCHS member! Nell recently competed in the Schreck Gaming Law Moot Court Competition in Las Vegas with her teammates, Marisa Gelabert and Helen Gustafson. Her favorite part about MCHS is the opportunity to strengthen her oral advocacy and persuasive writing skills, while forming long-lasting relationships with the other MCHS members! Nell won the Ralph L. Brill Award for Best Brief last semester in the Ilana Diamond Rovner Appellate Advocacy Competition and loves that MCHS gives her the opportunity to work on transferring her writing skills into strong oral advocacy skills. In addition to MCHS, Nell serves as the Social Media Coordinator for the Chicago-Kent Society of Women in Law and works part-time as a law clerk at a probate litigation firm. In her free time, Nell enjoys cooking, yoga, and trying the many different restaurants around Chicago!

Nell says that MCHS was instrumental in strengthening the skills sought by employers, and she knows that being a member of MCHS helped her during the OCI interview process because “it helped me highlight my marketable skills and demonstrated my interest in pursuing litigation and appellate advocacy after graduation.” Nell is excited to be working as a summer associate at Saul Ewing this summer and is looking forward to competing and coaching during her 3L year.

Meet Callie! Callie is a 3L in the Day Division and a Junior Member. Callie holds a B.A. in History from Bryn Mawr College.

As a self-proclaimed "jack of all trades," Callie has worked in multiple fields of law, including criminal law, immigration, toxic torts litigation, and medical malpractice. For the past seven months, she has worked as a law clerk for Ed Fox & Associates, a plaintiffs' civil rights firm that primarily litigates cases of police abuse. She recently competed in the Rovner Competition. She is also currently working on her seminar paper under the guidance of Professor Heyman which will analyze anti-LGBTQ laws around the country through the lens of First Amendment jurisprudence. Before joining MCHS, she competed in the very first Gender and Sexuality Moot Court Competition at Michigan State University.

In her (limited) free time, Callie likes to perform in her local community theater productions. She also sews, knits, and crochets her own clothes and costumes.
On March 2 (her birthday) Callie will compete at the National Energy and Sustainability Moot Court Competition with her partners Jake Marshall and Ari Lieberman. "We have been working hard to refine our arguments and master this incredibly difficult problem. With our preparation combined with the help of our coaches, guest judges, and a little birthday luck, we should have no problem reaching our competition goals."
