On Friday, Oct. 5, the DePaul Honors Speakers Series will host a live podcast featuring a recent DePaul graduate and the unique, ongoing project that grew out of his Sociology master’s thesis. “Chicago Drill Rap and Activism: Exile, Refuge, and Resistance” will bring Caullen Hudson back to campus to lead and record a podcast conversation about Chicago and the international refugee experience and to screen the latest episode in the project’s Chi DNA micro-documentary series.
They are the products of SoapBox Productions and Organizing, a film production and social activism non-profit organization that utilizes creative projects and multi-media platforms on behalf of social change. Chicago Drill ‘n Activism, Chi DNA, emerged from Hudson’s master’s thesis in sociology in which he explored the development of two forms of resistance occurring in Chicago: drill rap, Chicago’s once-underground brand of gansta rap, and resurging grassroots activism. Chi DNA uses film and other forms of media to capture the words and lives of those involved in the two movements.
This free, public event is being co-sponsored by the Faculty Scholarship Support Center and the Department of Sociology. It will be held from 3:00-4:30 in SAC 161, 2320 N. Kenmore Ave., on DePaul’s Lincoln Park Campus. For more information, contact [email protected]
