“[Black lung disease is] a tragedy, because it is incurable and completely preventable at the same time” says Dr. Robert Cohen, clinical professor at UIC School of Public Health.

Cohen is director of SPH’s Mining Education and Research (MinER) Center, whose Black Lung Clinic received a five-year, $6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It’s a crucial support to the Clinic’s work screening miners for black lung and connecting them to care and benefits.

Congratulations to Dr. Linda Rae Murray, professor of UIC Health Policy and Administration, who was awarded the Lifetime Impact Award by the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health at this year’s National Worker Health & Safety Leadership Awards.

Murray has been a faculty member with SPH since 2009, where she has advocated for public health both locally and nationally. She has previously served as director of environmental and occupational health for the Chicago Department of Public Health, chief medical officer for the Cook County Department of Public Health, member of the Health Equity and Social Justice Team at the National Association of City and County Health Officials and president of the American Public Health Association. Most recently, Murray co-chaired Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s transition team subcommittee on health and human services.

School of Public Health staff continue to excel in all they do, gaining recognition throughout the University of Illinois Chicago community for their dedication and passion!

In total, six SPH staff were nominated for a variety of university-wide awards. Two, Cherie Weinewuth and John O’Keefe, were named Award of Merit winners!

Congratulations to both winners as well as nominees Keith Partyka, Griselda Magallanes, Jacob Wilson, and Robin Sylvester for their incredible accomplishments and contributions, and for embodying the remarkable commitment and excellence of our staff at SPH!

🌱 SPH undergrads got to DIG IN to public health at Windy City Harvest and Chicago Botanic Garden’s Farm on Ogden.

The Farm is a provider of healthy food access and employment in Chicago’s Lawndale neighborhood, where students had the chance to explore and experience a therapeutic horticulture workshop.
