Starting June 1, students across Illinois will join the University of Illinois Cancer Center to conduct hands-on , work alongside leading scientists and explore careers in medicine, public health and translational science.

Through four unique training programs, 30 undergraduate, graduate and medical students from diverse backgrounds will gain hands-on experience and mentorship opportunities at the Cancer Center.

The University of Illinois Cancer Center’s $150,000 Team Science Award supports collaborative cancer research projects that advance discoveries and secure future National Cancer Institute (NCI) funding.

The 2026 award team, led by Cancer Center Director Jan Kitajewski, PhD, includes researchers Ying Hu, PhD, Mateusz Wietecha, PhD, DMD, VK Gadi, MD PhD, and community partner Joanne Glenn, RN MBA.

The University of Illinois Cancer Center, UI Health, Mile Square Health Center and the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry put on another successful annual screening awareness campaign for oral, head and neck cancer.

The weeklong campaign in April, which is Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month, served nearly 160 people who took advantage of free screening exams that take about 5 to 10 minutes and can detect early signs of the cancer.

Nobel Prize-winning scientist Harold Varmus, MD, a pioneering cancer researcher and former Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), visited the Cancer Center and the lab of Director Jan Kitajewski, PhD, who completed his postdoctoral fellowship in molecular oncology working with Varmus at the University of California, San Francisco.

The Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination (CRTEC) team at the University of Illinois Cancer Center participated in the 2026 Association of Cancer Center Administrators (ACCA) Cancer Center Administrators Forum (CCAF) in April.

The annual forum convened administrators and leaders from National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers and institutions pursuing designation to discuss emerging trends in cancer center operations, research administration, workforce development and collaborative leadership.

May is , and University of Illinois Cancer Center member Ryan Nguyen, DO, was featured on ABC 7 Chicago discussing skin cancer and how to prevent it, since anyone with skin is at risk.

Nguyen, a UI Health oncologist specializing in melanoma and lung cancer, shared details about the American Cancer Society’s skin cancer prevention awareness campaign, which uses the slogan "Slip! Slop! Slap! And Wrap.”

University of Illinois Cancer Center members Salman Khetani, PhD, and Robert Motl, PhD, and trainee member A'Lester Allen, PhD, were among those honored by the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research with its 2025-26 Research and Scholarship Awards.

Featured in UIC Today, they and the other honorees are recognized as outstanding representatives of the UIC community whose drive to solve problems and expand knowledge creates local and global impact. The Cancer Center is part of UIC and its academic health enterprise, UI Health.

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) 2026 Annual Meeting featured research from authors and trainees affiliated with the University of Illinois Cancer Center, the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), and UI Health, the academic health enterprise at UIC.

The meeting, which was held April 17-22 in San Diego, California, gathered together scientists, clinicians, other health care professionals, survivors, patients and advocates to share the latest advances in cancer science and medicine.
