IIThink Smart Grids Techno-Economic Analysis of Electrical Smart Grid Technology IPRO 338

There are many Smart Grid technologies available such as advanced metering devices, efficient building systems, plug-in hybrid vehicles, dynamic systems controls and distribution operations, data management, smart products, smart appliances, isolated microgrids, storage and regenerative energy systems, wind and solar applications, power demand management, etc. However, the use of these technologie

s are not yet cost-effective, practical, or offer a realistic return on investment to electrical construction contractors or residential and commercial consumers. Therefore, there is a need to research and study the array of smart grid technologies and determine which of them offer the best return on investment and realistic application for electrical contractors and consumers. And, to develop some practical ways to help electrical contractors and consumer understand the benefits of smart grid technology from a cost and green standpoint. This compilation of viable cost-effective technologies and business development strategies would be made available for consumers and electrical contractors to actually use. This IPRO is sponsored by the Electrical Contractors' Association of City of Chicago, and Operation Green Jobs, and is associated with the IIT NECA student chapter. Actual on-site visits to Green and/or Smart Grid facilities are being planned along with guest speakers who will assist the IPRO team with the project an support the IIT NECA student chapter, and involvement with the IIT Smart Grid initiative. Aspects of green technology which meet LEED requirements may also be incorporated into this IPRO project. Past site visits have been to the Trump Tower, Chicago Green facility, and actual BIM control center for the new Children's memorial Hospital by Northwestern University.

Small Wind Turbines are electric generators that use the energy of the
wind to produce clean, emissions-free power for individual homes,
farms, and small businesses. With this simple and increasingly popular
technology, individuals can generate their own power and cut their
energy bills while helping to protect the environment. Unlike utility-scale
turbines, small turbines can be suitable for use on properties as small as
one acre of land in most areas of the country
