Thanks to Columbia College Chicago and The Columbia Chronicle for this nice cover art and a sweet review of our show about City So Real with Steve James and Jackson James, father and son filmmakers here in Chicago. Steve has visited our classrooms many times as a visiting artist. Most recently he visited Big Chicago: Chicago Film History a freshmen experience course with faculty Jeff Spitz.

In case you missed this experience in a Zoom Webinar with Bob Hercules, Keith Walker and special guests from four films by Media Process Group. Response to this show was very heartening for us all. Clips are from doc films about Bill T. Jones, Father Michael Pfleger, Maya Angelou and BahaiTeachings.org. The evening kicked off with a five minute gem showing 35 years of work by MPG.
Proud to be the host of this special Chicago doc experience. Flyer designed by Columbia College Chicago student Alea Rodriguez. Vimeo edited lightly by student Rylie Smedley of The Doc Unit. Shout out to Columbia College Chicago Alumni, Dirk Matthews.

In case you missed it here is a Vimeo recording of the event featuring film clips and convos on race, Lincoln, documentary, dance, social justice, faith and the ways of understanding the incredible life of Maya Angelou. Her son Guy Johnson entered the zoom late and stole the show. Special thanks to Columbia College Chicago Alumni, and students Rylie Smedley and MacNerland of The Doc Unit.

Kudos to former doc student and leader of Viva Doc, Arlen Parsa. Arlen has created impactful, interactive websites for doc filmmakers. He also makes documentaries and IN THIS CASE HE MADE NEWS. Follow him on twitter .

Putting red dots over the faces of the slave-owning signers, Arlen Parsa, a Chicago-based documentary filmmaker, decolonized John Trumbull’s painting “Declaration of Independence,” which hangs in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol.
