Congratulations to Daniel Kind, recipient of the 2026 Hugo F. Sonnenschein Medal of Excellence! The award is the highest honor bestowed upon a UChicago undergraduate, in recognition of the same qualities of its namesake: unwavering hope, ambition for others and an abiding courage of conviction.

A fourth-year in the College, Daniel helped found the Orlando Secure Housing Project in honor of a childhood friend who passed away while experiencing housing insecurity. The organization works to provide mutual aid, raise awareness, and advocate for policy changes and increased funding for homelessness services.

These 4 undergrads reimagined the popular video game Stardew Valley as a research tool, modifying the game to explore degrowth and what it could look like in real-world communities.

A large part of the original game is centered on steady, often exponential growth; expanding farms, profits and progress with almost no consequences. Their modified version, Stardew Valley: Big Ag Mod, challenges that and asks what happens when growth is no longer treated as endless or automatically beneficial.

By redesigning characters, systems and storylines, they highlighted how constant growth can affect the environment, local communities and political structures. The result is a version of the game that encourages players to think differently about sustainability, scarcity and alternative futures.

Did you know UChicago has its very own beach tucked away beneath the Henry Hinds Laboratory for Geophysical Science?

Well, kind of. The space is actually home to a historic wave simulator that allows students to study how waves move sand, rocks, and shells in different environments.

Even when differences define the room, the responsibility of a reporter stays the same: document, don’t distort. Over spring break, third-year Nathaniel Rodwell-Simon stepped into the White House press pool, camera in hand, to do exactly that.

Nathaniel was invited by New York Times photojournalist and three-time Pulitzer Prize winner Doug Mills to shadow him as he covered the White House, gaining a firsthand look at the pace and demands of the profession.

“In covering every president since the Ronald Reagan administration, he [Doug Mills] has so much knowledge about the way journalism and photojournalism have evolved over that time,” Rodwell-Simon said.

Nathaniel worked alongside seasoned photojournalists at press briefings and Oval Office meetings, learning not just how to capture the moment but how to carry the responsibility that comes with it.

Sometimes great ideas bloom when you’re least expecting them … that’s exactly how Mateo Caloia, founder of (P)RIND, grew his snack brand from the ground up.

It all began when Mateo took a chance by applying to the Polsky Center’s College New Venture Challenge, where student startups pitch their companies for seed funding. After receiving significant support, the (P)RIND team took off, and they haven’t stopped since.

Check out and visit the Maroon Market to try their snacks for yourself!

Nearly half of UChicago students study abroad at least once, and the College added six new programs for the 2025–26 academic year to continue to support immersive, experiential learning around the world.

The Faculty-led programs are built by scholars with deep knowledge of the regions where they teach, giving students the opportunity to engage each place as both a classroom and a subject of study.

This Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating by highlighting the work of undergraduates in the College who helped bring feminist history to life.

Working with the archive of artist and activist Barbara Morgan, students organized and cataloged decades of posters, journals and other materials documenting feminist movements. Their work helped bring these materials to the public through a new exhibition on campus.
