Meadville Lombard Theological School

Meadville Lombard Theological School Meadville Lombard brings out the best in our students so they will be ready to lead the community. Contact us to learn more about our Master's degree programs.

As a Unitarian Universalist identity school, Meadville Lombard welcomes and embraces students from all cultural, racial, and religious backgrounds. We educate our students to be bridge-builders and boundary-crossers, who can lead their community--either as ordained ministers or vocational leaders--toward bringing justice, equity, and compassion into practice. Our Contextual Learning model in a low

-residency curriculum allows you to learn where you live and serve, with 3-4 visits to our Chicago campus per year, when you will attend intensive courses and deeply bond with fellow students. Meadville Learning Community will support you not only when you are a student, but also throughout your career as a spiritual community leader.

Stepping out of decades of a career into the next phase of retirement can be equal parts exciting and nerve-wracking. If you’re making this move right now, meet “The Third Act!” This new offering from our lifelong learning program, is for all those who want to navigate this major transition thoughtfully and in community. Led by Rev. Dr. Clare Butterfield, “The Third Act” is a nine-month journey of reading, discussion, and fellowship with a cohort of peers.

Stretching luxuriously over two full semesters, this thoughtfully designed program includes remote whole-group meetings every two weeks, with asynchronous reading and reflection prompts in between. The group will meet every other Monday from 12:30-2:30pm CT, starting August 31.

If you’re ready to start your third (or fourth, or fifth) act with thoughtfulness, grace, and a little help from your friends, you’ve come to the right place. Check out the full proposed program, readings, and scheduled guest speakers for “The Third Act”: https://meadville.edu/light/the-third-act/

Being known for the work you do is thrilling and fulfilling but sometimes... a little chilling? Fame on any level, from getting recognized at the grocery store to being pursued by paparazzi, is complex. Ministers and other spiritual leaders often have to master the art of public intimacy, which is paid labor that brings a real, private self into public view.

"Public Intimacy and Authentic Leadership” is a lifelong learning program led by Rev. Adam Robersmith that engages with the questions and challenges of showing up in public with authenticity and courage. Starting this September, join a cohort of your peers on a nine-month journey of reading and reflection as you learn tools and strategies that will deepen your ability to publicly lead with courage.

Clergy, non-profit leaders, actors, organizers, politicians, comedians, and more are welcome to join this two-semester program that includes group meetings every other week, asynchronous reading and discussion, and two coaching sessions with Rev. Robersmith. On the other side of your program, you’ll receive a transcript that notes 60 hours of continuing education in Leadership Studies from an accredited institution.

“Public Intimacy and Authentic Leadership” meets Tuesdays from 6-8pm CT, starting Tuesday, September 1. Partial scholarships are available for this program! Submit your application by June 1 for consideration for financial assistance. View the full program description and schedule: https://meadville.edu/light/public-intimacy/

You’re invited to join us on Zoom for a public conversation on May 11 at 6pm CT. Fish Stark, American Humanist Association (AHA) Executive Director, joins Elías Ortega, Meadville Lombard President, for a conversation on the separation of church and state: why it's integral to social and economic justice, why church-state separation advocacy is a threat to the broader authoritarian project, how advocacy on these issues can bring theists and non-theists together, and what is working in the AHA and coalition partners' efforts to defend religious freedom under the current administration.

Congratulations to our latest class of Spiritual Directors! This Saturday, twenty-two hardworking souls will be commissioned as Spiritual Directors. This is the third group to successfully complete the Spiritual Direction Formation and Certification program offered through our lifelong learning institute, LIGHT.

After two years of study, practicum, and peer supervision, these newly-formed Spiritual Directors are now ready to guide others on their own journeys of spiritual discovery. Unitarian Universalist-trained Spiritual Directors support each person they serve on their own unique path, without judgment or dogma.

The commissioning ceremony will be held this Saturday, May 2, at 12pm (Noon) Central, and it’s open to the public! Come out and support our Spiritual Directors as they celebrate the completion of their program and the next steps in their service to the world. Learn more and RSVP here:

American astronaut Mae Jemison said, “When you look at the Earth from space, you realize that our planet is a beautiful, interconnected system. We are all in this together." This Earth Day, we are reflecting on the thoughts and emotions provoked by these gorgeous photos taken by astronauts on the recent Artemis II mission. We're called to be responsible stewards of Earth and the incredible diversity that populates it. Scientific exploration like the Artemis II mission is an important reminder of what humans can achieve for good when we work together!

The will offer their annual Earth Day worship service on Wednesday, April 22, at 7pm CT. This year’s theme is “Sentience Surrounds Us.” Join together with like-minded people from all over the world to celebrate the many forms of sentience that share our world, in tribute to the memory of the late Dr. Jane Goodall.
