The UIC Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy

The UIC Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy IRRPP represents a major commitment on the part of UIC to better understand racial and ethnic diversity in Chicago, the nation, and the world.

The Institute for Research on Race & Public Policy at the University of Illinois Chicago promotes and coordinates engaged research on racial and ethnic justice in the U.S. The Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy (IRRPP) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) promotes, coordinates, and conducts innovative research at the intersection of race, ethnicity and public policy. One of

our central aims is to increase the quantity, quality and relevance of research on racial and ethnic groups facing persistent inequalities and inequities. We focus on historically underrepresented people of color as we affect and are affected by public policy. The Institute pursues a comprehensive multiracial, multiethnic and multicultural agenda that includes African Americans, Latinos, American Indians, Asian Americans and other groups confronted with systematic racial, ethnic, and class barriers. A primary goal is to improve both the understanding and conditions of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups that continue to experience major difficulties within contemporary urban settings.

In June 2025, the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy (IRRPP) hosted a powerful pilot program: the Leading Race-Conscious School Improvement (LRCSI) Workshop. We welcomed 40 K–12 educators and administrators to participate in a three-day professional development experience designed to build capacity for race-conscious school improvement.

Facilitated by UIC College of Education faculty—Dr. Lionel Allen Jr., Dr. Decoteau Irby, Dr. Van Lac, and Dr. Jason Salisbury—the workshop supported education leadership teams in learning how to systematically and intentionally center racial justice in their school improvement efforts.

Let’s keep building schools where every student can thrive!
