Chicago-Kent College of Law

Chicago-Kent College of Law Welcome to the official page of Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology. Classes here are challenging and intensely engaging.

Legal education at IIT Chicago-Kent is scholarly yet pragmatic, broad-based yet personalized, demanding yet anything but rigid. There's an energy to the law school that derives partly from our proximity to Chicago's fast-paced legal community and partly from the caliber of the people here and their passion for their work. Faculty scholarship fuels our academic enterprise and brings a constant supp

ly of fresh ideas to the classroom. Our low student-faculty ratio promotes day-to-day engagement with some of the most influential scholars and teachers in the nation. Our goal is to provide you with a solid grounding in classical legal studies along with the professional skills required to put that knowledge to use. To that end, we place a premium on skills training in a variety of ways: through our formidable legal writing, trial advocacy and appellate advocacy programs, through practicum courses in specialized areas of study, and through practical exercises integrated into many doctrinal classes. You'll also learn the practical side of being a lawyer by working on real cases through externships, through our clinical programs in the Chicago-Kent Law Offices, and via any number of pro bono opportunities you'll find through our Public Interest Resource Center. This is a place where rigorous academics, superior skills training and close interaction with faculty produce a distinctive, personalized approach to your professional education.

Congratulations to David A. Sklansky, winner of Chicago-Kent’s 2026 Roy C. Palmer Prize on Democracy, Civil Liberties, and the Rule of Law for his book, "Criminal Justice in a Divided America: Police, Punishment, and the Future of Our Democracy."

The Palmer Prize honors scholarship that examines threats to, or support of, the liberal democratic constitutional order and encourages meaningful public dialogue around issues shaping individual rights and government responsibility.

Sklansky’s submission stood out for its exploration of how political polarization and failures in criminal justice are deeply connected, and why addressing one may require confronting the other.

What happens when artificial intelligence begins acting on our behalf?
Daniel Katz, a Chicago-Kent College of Law professor and leading scholar at the intersection of law and technology, is helping answer that question with his latest book, "Agentic AI in Law and Finance: Navigating a New Era of Autonomous Systems", co-authored with Michael Bommarito and Jillian Bommarito.
The book explores how autonomous AI systems are reshaping the legal and business worlds, covering everything from what AI agents are, to how they are designed, governed, and responsibly managed. Katz also shares how AI itself played a role in accelerating the writing process, highlighting both the possibilities and limitations of these emerging technologies.
As AI continues to transform society, Katz emphasizes the importance of helping legal professionals and the public better understand the systems shaping the future.

Serena Napolitano’26 transformed her law school experience into a foundation built on advocacy, preparation, and real courtroom experience.

As a first-generation law student, Serena Napolitano ’26 built her law school experience through the support of faculty, classmates, and family while fully engaging in Chicago-Kent College of Law’s Trial Advocacy program. Through consistent preparation and practice, she developed the confidence to think quickly, build strong arguments, and advocate effectively in the courtroom.

That foundation carried into regional and national competitions, where she gained experience working under pressure and further strengthened her litigation skills.
She also built practical experience in Chicago’s legal community at Wiedner & McAuliffe and through exposure to proceedings in the Loop, connecting her academic training with real-world practice. She will continue with the firm as an associate after passing the bar.
