Enrique Carrillo Jr. graduated from DePaul University last spring with a minor in Japanese Language. He was an active member of our Japanese language student community, served as one of the student leaders of our biweekly Japanese Language Table, and participated in the summer intensive Japanese language program in Hokkaido. One of his most notable achievements was receiving the Osaka Award (Second-Place Grand Prize) for his speech, “The Importance of Encounters,” at the 39th Annual Japanese Language Speech Contest, held at the Consulate-General of Japan in Chicago 在シカゴ日本国総領事館 in March 2025. As part of this award, he received a two-week visit to Osaka, Japan, including airfare, and traveled there in December 2025. Below is a report posted on the Chicago Sister Cities website, reflecting the long-standing sister-city relationship between Chicago and Osaka.
