UIC School of Design

UIC School of Design University of Illinois Chicago School of Design Design is a discipline of rigorous inquiry: questioning what is and what could be.

The practice of design is a responsibility and a privilege. It is an independent pursuit that precipitates collective action. Design advances the interplay between the exalted and the everyday, and stimulates an interchange between diverse disciplines. Serving as both unifying force and catalyst for change, the designer plays a pivotal role in the formulation and advocacy of ideas. Chicago, one of

the world’s great cities, is an ideal environment for the will of the designer-citizen: sharp-eyed, proactive, transcendent. UIC Design provides the impetus and critical forum necessary to amplify talent and quicken intuition, perfect skills and expand the intellect.

This or That

My work investigates the dichotomy of the analog and the digital. Dichotomy is described as “a division or contrast between two things that are represented as being opposed or entirely different.” However, when one casts their eyes upon the contrast of analog and digital outputs, a conversation is sparked about how the opposing subjects might converge and create a hybrid. My interest in this is motivated by the continuous digitization of our world. Over time, lifestyles, products, and processes have shifted from tangible to digital. This reality evokes one question: can we, as humans, sustainably thrive on the singularity of digital solutions? This question prompts me to look to slower, analog processes of the past to sustain balance in my work as a designer. In life, we are constantly prompted to make a choice between this or that. This act contradicts our very makeup as humans. We and our environment are a concoction of converging elements. In this light, we can investigate the opposition of the analog and digital. As a result, we find the relevance of each and how to reconcile them in tandem with one another.

DES350 explores advanced topics in typography and coding as forms of entangled expression. Topics include post-digital publishing, interactive manifestos, generative typography, and the potential for collaboration and play within live coding environments. Emphasis is placed on the tensions between digital and analog technologies.

In the Expressive Action project, students selected an expressive action word and designed a mutable poster. This word served as the basis for a physical printed poster, as well as a digital translation of typography in motion. Students considered how the meaning of the word was to be conveyed through its form and arrangement in space, as well as what opportunities existed to communicate the meaning through movement and change over time.

DES480 Graphic Design Thesis is the exploration, deduction, and design of student-selected research topics. Accumulated knowledge and skills are utilized to develop investigative projects (Poetry Poster, Plan B, Word Poster, etc) and year-long capstone work.

Poetry Poster
A micro-poem of 6–10 words is written and then represented through the form of a poster.

Plan B
The ideas of a prior project, from the class, are manifested in a work that utilizes a method of making that is different from the prior project. This second rendition requires the use of the Fabrication Lab or Project Lab.

Word Poster
A word is chosen from a given list and combined with a thesis topic to create a typographic poster.

The Open Archive and the UIC Design Print Lab (.print.lab) celebrated the first RISO Residency by hosting a publication launch for the School of Design community 🩷🩵💛

The RISO Residents, faculty member Lisa Armstrong () and MDes student Junior Pacheco (.ooo) shared works made on the Risograph duplicator during their month-long residency in the Print Lab this past summer.

Junior presented ‘Studies in Surface & Stitch’, a swatch book of RISO printed textile + wallpaper motifs along with a 5’x 5’ RISO printed paper quilt. Lisa presented two new publication works, including ‘CICADA sounds’, an archival zine & mixed media collage made in collaboration with kee mabin, and a screening of RISO-printed animation works by the artist.

Many thanks to the students, faculty, staff, family, and friends that joined us for a successful launch! 🎉 if you want to check out Lisa and Junior’s work, swing by the Print Lab or the Open Archive!
