Melissa Lindberg is retiring today! Melissa has touched every single PhD student record since she started her career in graduate affairs in BSD: in the early days it was the admissions process, then technology narrowed her job to every teaching assistant (twice), every student in first-year ethics, every student in qBio bootcamp and then expanded to include every student who graduated. Melissa has also worked with Dean’s Council since a very long time ago. Please join OGPA in wishing her the very best now that she no longer has to set her alarm for the crack of dawn to drive through all that construction on the Kennedy and DuSable L*D to get to Hyde Park. You can connect with Melissa on Facebook and LinkedIn.

Artists who are also scientists, check this out!

In the course of scientific research, beautiful images can appear in simulations, under microscopes or in photography. They can offer a window into the process of scientific research to the public, as well as inspiring a moment to step back and consider the beauty of the world.

Public Health Sciences graduate student Jincong "Jason" Freeman is studying health disparities in breast cancer patients (Black women are 42% more likely to die of breast cancer than white women). One outstanding issue is palliative care discrepancies.

A University of Chicago graduate student hopes to bring attention to breast cancer disparities and improve care through his research.

Recent graduate Shivang Sullere (Neurobiology) is first author on a paper identifying alternative pathways in the brain that relieve pain. He and his advisor, Prof. Daniel McGehee, are hoping this creates a way forward for developing pain treatment that is non-opiod and non-addictive.

Targeting a receptor for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine produces powerful analgesic effects in mice, even in animals with tolerance to opioids, suggesting a promising path to developing non-opioid painkillers.
