Ci3 Our members bring a wide range of expertise and come from diverse disciplines.

Ci3 at the University of Chicago addresses the systemic and structural barriers that create disparities in the health and well-being of young people marginalized by race, gender, and/or sexual orientation. Ci3 creates an intellectual hub for a network of faculty, staff and students to work collaboratively with partners from outside of the University to address critical problems in sexual and repro

ductive health, rights, and justice. With a particular focus on adolescents, women, and communities of color, our goal is to develop new research methodologies, evidence, intervention strategies, and novel solutions to advance human health and well-being.

It's a critical time for young people's reproductive rights.

This , help us get our s*xual health games and tools into the hands of young people, so they can emerge into adulthood with agency over their bodies and futures.

Our suite of products includes Hearsay, a card game in which students practice s*xual health decision-making through the lens of a first year at university. This storytelling card game educates players about various forms of and while also de-stigmatizing and normalizing their use among young people.

Ci3 Statement on Youth Reproductive Rights Following Supreme Court Decision

We support access to abortion care and support young people’s ability to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and future, despite today’s Supreme Court decision.

Since the national press leaked Justice Alto’s opinion draft in May, Illinois lawmakers have affirmed that abortion care will remain safe and legal in the state. The repeal of Illinois’ law requiring parental involvement in abortion also went into effect June 1, 2022, an effort led by state-wide advocates and informed by evidence of the harm caused by the law. However, given today’s news, we know that it will now be harder for young people across the country to access safe and time-sensitive care.

We held conversations with our Youth Advisory Council members to understand their perspectives about the future of reproductive health. They had many questions about what might happen next and expressed concern for their own futures (see below).

Now more than ever, it’s important to understand adolescent s*xual and reproductive health needs and advocate with and on behalf of young people, so they can emerge into adulthood with agency over their own bodies and futures.

We encourage you to follow our partners for the latest resources for parents, caregivers, and young people.

Research suggests that racial and ethnic diversity in the health and biomedical science workforce can improve both access to and the quality of health care for underserved communities.

Published in the journal of Urban Education, Ci3 researchers conducted a pilot study with Chicago high school students to explore their interest in health and biomedical science careers after playing Caduceus Quest, a Ci3 theory-based digital role-playing game. Caduceus Quest provides health education and aims to encourage health and biomedical science career interest in Black and Latinx youth.

Pediatrician Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha exposed the Flint Water Crisis after finding, through research, that children were exposed to dangerous levels of lead in Flint, Michigan.

“I did something most doctors and scientists don’t usually do,” said Dr. Hanna-Attisha. “I literally walked out of my clinic with my white coat on and stood up in one of our hospital conference rooms where we usually have resident lectures. I shared the research that our kids are in harm’s way and I demanded action."

Today, she is dedicated to improving the health and development of children, through developing programs in healthcare, early education, and parental education programs.
