As a result of Jessica's AGUA-sponsored summer internship at the National Soil Erosion Research Laboratory, she is now a published author. Congratulations, Jessica!

Earth Science senior Jessica Lartey (pictured here) and NEIU Earth Science Professor Laura Sanders are the second and third authors, respectively, on a new article in the journal Agricultural & Environmental Letters. The article is based on work that Lartey did as an intern at a USDA-Agricultural Research Service national lab last summer. Lartey worked at the National Soil Erosion Research Laboratory in West Lafayette, Ind., under the direction of mentor scientist Mark R. Williams. Her research was funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Hispanic-Serving Institutions education grant, which is directed by Sanders.

Congratulations to Earth Science major Oscar Coronel, who has been awarded the USDA-NEIU AGUA Scholarship. Part of the Agriculture and Undergraduate Achievement program, the $25,000 scholarship is funded by a grant to Northeastern from the United States Department of Agriculture. NEIU Earth Science faculty members Laura Sanders, Ken Voglesonger and Jean Hemzacek secured the funding to support an Earth Science major. "The AGUA Project at Northeastern Illinois University scholarship will allow Oscar to focus on his studies and relieve some of the financial pressure that Northeastern students feel as they balance school, work and family responsibilities," Sanders said. "Oscar was selected because of his strong academic record, his demonstrated research abilities, and his intent to pursue a degree in an agriculture-related field." Oscar spent last summer researching hydrologic factors affecting native mussel species in the North Branch of the Chicago River, and recently presented his findings at the Diversity in STEM Conference in Utah (see photo).
