Dear Friends of the History Department and Alumni,

In 2024, your donations to the History Department allowed us to award 7 scholarships to our undergraduate and 2 graduate students which was a huge help for them to pay for part of their tuition. We are grateful for your generosity that helped us raise a little over $4,100 on Giving Tuesday!! We would like to raise that amount by 15% or $4,715. Please help us meet our goal this year.

An anonymous donor will match that amount if we raise $4,715! This would break all records of previous fundraising for the history department. Let's make HISTORY!

Giving Tuesday is a change to help our students to 1) focus more on their coursework and 2) start working their dream jobs sooner. History majors go on to become teachers, researchers, archivists, and lawyers. We hope you join us in breaking last year's record with your 2025 contributions by clicking here.

On behalf of the entire History Department, THANK YOU!

Ten NEIU students of various majors participated in this summer's Study Abroad Program in South of Spain. The history chair, Dr. Mateo Farzaneh assisted by an Office of International Program, led the group and taught a two-week history of Islamic Spain while students lived and experienced life in Seville and traveled to Cordoba, Granada, and Cadiz. They learned about Muslim (Moorish) rule in Spain from 711-1492 by the end of which along with Jews were expelled, forcefully converted to Christianity or killed. Enjoy the photos and inquire about future programs.

It's been a while since the history department has posted anything but let's begin with this wonderful announcement.

It's a pleasure to announce that Dr. Josh Salzmann is offering a unique course on the History of Chicago in spring 2026 that anyone can attend. It promises to be one of the best ways to learn about our city in an academic way. Take a look and share the flyer. Thank you!

Our second Assyrian history and culture event of this year took place on December 4th where the community packed the library room to listen to a great book talk by Dr. Alda Benjamen. This event along with Dr. Eden Naby’s talk in November was organized by the History Department while we proudly sponsored the Assyrians from Persia (Iran) to the United States immigration exhibit. The exhibit is open to the public and it will end on December 16, 2024.
