For our next Faculty Spotlight, give it up for WSGS Director herself—Dr. Betsy Jones Hemenway!!!

Pronouns: She/her

Degree: PhD in Russian and Soviet History, concentration in Women’s and Gender History

Affiliation to WSGS: WSGS Director, Joint appointment in WSGS and History. I teach History of Feminist Thought, Feminist Methodologies, Feminist Pedagogies, WSGS Capstone; in History I now teach Global History, 1500-present.

Hometown: Wayland MA, a small town outside of Boston

One favorite moment in feminist history: I am particularly fond of pointing out that the February 1917 revolution in Russia, which led to the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II, started as a result of women’s marches on International Women’s Day. Shortly after the departure of the tsar, Russian women were granted the right to vote by the new government. (Because the Russian calendar was different from that in the West in 1917, 8 March was 23 February).

One thing you want people to know/understand about WSGS: WSGS is for everyone. This field helps us to understand the world differently, through the lens of intersectionality.

Congrats Dr. Hemenway on your last semester at Loyola before retirement 🥲 Get to know this special person before May!
