Greetings and Happy !

On this day of global giving, we are raising funds for two scholarships for our Art + Design students at NEIU: the MakeSpace Fellowship and the ACRE (Artists’ Cooperative Residency & Exhibitions) Residency Alumni Scholarship!

Meet our first ACRE Residency Alumni Scholarship recipient: James Welch! James (BA’ 18 and recent MFA graduate from University of Kansas - Lawrence) was our first recipient of the ACRE Residency Alumni Scholarship. This scholarship allowed James to attend the two week ACRE residency in Summer 2021. “In the Fall of 2020, I applied for the ACRE Artist Residency through NEIU’s sponsorship for BIPOC students, both current and alumni. Seizing the opportunity was crucial, offering a shot at a residency I couldn’t have afforded independently. Selected for the 2021 summer cohort, I forged valuable connections with fellow artists. One individual, in particular, played a pivotal role in shaping my MFA thesis project. My gratitude towards NEIU for enabling my participation in the ACRE residency is immeasurable. Furthermore, my time at ACRE opened doors to additional residencies, bolstering my confidence as an artist to explore further opportunities.”

The NEIU Art and Design Department is saddened by the loss of our colleague and friend Don Heggemann. Don has been an assistant in the ceramics studio for about a decade and for the last year and a half was the first contact point for the department as our office administrator. Don’s smile, humor, and kindness will be missed by all. Rest in Peace.
