Indian Buffalo Management Act for restoring the Great Plains grasslands and the culture of Tribal Nations
Two hundred years ago, tens of millions of bison roamed the Great Plains. Tragically, bison were slaughtered and pushed to the brink of extinction. And today, bison occupy less than 1% of their historical range.

Ten years ago, the bison was named our national mammal. Despite the official recognition of significance, much work remains to fully recover this iconic species.

Congress now has an opportunity to help bring bison back to the Great Plains. The bipartisan Indian Buffalo Management Act will strengthen federal support for Tribal Nations’ critical work to restore this keystone species.

Here’s why it matters:
Grasslands, wildlife, and ecosystems. The grasslands ecosystem in the Great Plains benefits from the grazing and movement habits of buffalo.
Food security. Growing and restoring the buffalo population improves food availability in some of the most food-scarce areas of the United States.
Cultural heritage. For many Native Nations, restoring buffalo to the Great Plains grasslands is part of restoring their culture and community.
