Geological and Environmental Sciences, CSU Chico Welcome to the official page of the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at Californi

Why should you become a Chico State Geology or Environmental Science student?
*Small classroom sizes to maximize hands on learning
*Many of our students engage in undergraduate research and present papers at meetings of national societies like the GSA (Geological Society of America).
*Graduates of our programs are well prepared to get a job immediately after graduation (Something that is not true

at most research universities)
*There are more than 80 student scholarships and awards that the College of Natural Sciences gives out each year
*Because of the relatively small size of our Department, there is great camaraderie among our students, something that you will not find at the mega research universities.
*The Department is expanding its curriculum in Sustainability and the Environment.
*CSU Chico is located near Bidwell park, the country's second largest municipal park (over 3500 acres).

“What you hope to find is a tip of a tusk,” said Shapiro, a professor of paleontology and stratigraphy in the Geological and Environmental Sciences Department. “Not only do we have the tip, but we have the entire thing. And it’s just beautiful ivory. It’s mind-blowing.”
In the months that followed, so would more phenomenal finds. Shapiro, department chair and sedimentology professor Todd Greene, several staff members, and a handful of students continue to make regular treks to the site, never failing to discover at least one fossil.-Except from Unearthing California's Prehistoric Past

The U.S Forest Service is looking River Ranger Intern.

In partnership with the Pacific Southwest Region of the USDA Forest Service, MobilizeGreen seeks a River Ranger Resource Assistant (RA) Intern to participate in the Klamath National Forest’s whitewater recreation program. The River Ranger RA will have the opportunity to develop Class III whitewater boating skills and will assist the Forest’s river manager with the implementation of the program. Duties will include maintenance and resource protection measures at river access sites and river beaches along the Klamath River; delivery of whitewater boating safety information and leave no trace principles to non-commercial boaters; and river patrols to monitor the on-river operations of outfitter guides with special use permits on the river, among others.

The Resource Assistant's Program is designed for emerging professionals to launch their natural and cultural resources careers. The RA will receive hands-on learning experience, mentorship, and coaching to complete mission-critical work while developing leadership, critical thinking, and strategic communication skills. We are committed to creating a diverse conservation workforce and diverse applicants with relevant education or experience are encouraged to apply.

Work Environment: The RA will be expected to travel and work along the Wild and Scenic Klamath River corridor. Driving on paved and unpaved roads and occasionally hiking will be required. Fieldwork will primarily be at river access facilities, parking areas, raft launching areas, river access trails, river camping beaches, and on the Klamath River. Work may occur in tributary creeks, at other developed recreation sites, or occasionally in the backcountry in support of other program's field work such as fish snorkel surveys or wilderness and trails management. There may be some administrative work in an office, in adherence to local and national guidance surrounding the covid-19 pandemic.

This position is extremely demanding physically:

Daily activities include lifting and carrying for up to 200 yards approx. 50 pounds of whitewater equipment and gear over rocky, uneven terrain.
RA will develop class III whitewater boating skills for oarboat and inflatable kayak, which requires upper body physical strength, an ability to swim, and good overall mind/body coordination.

Location: Located in northwestern California, the community of Happy Camp is small, remote, and offers basic amenities such as a grocery store, a pharmacy, two restaurants, a gas station, a post office, and an auto parts store. The real draw of this town is the surrounding area. Nestled along the Wild and Scenic Klamath River, Happy Camp provides access to the geologically and biologically diverse Marble Mountains, Siskiyou, and Red Buttes Wilderness Areas. Sparsely populated, and distant from major metropolitan areas, the Klamath Mountains provide a haven from crowding. Year-round recreational opportunities include hiking, biking, four-wheel driving, picnicking, horseback riding, hunting and fishing, winter skiing and snowmobiling, and of course whitewater rafting. Various supermarkets, convenience stores, and specialty stores can be found roughly an hour and a half east in Yreka, CA and a little under three hours west along winding and scenic highways in the Northern California coastal cities of Arcata and Eureka, CA.

The Klamath River area is generally hot and dry during the summer: day-time high temperatures routinely exceed 100 degrees F; overnight low temperatures are generally in the 60 degrees F range. Cool and rainy weather typically commences in late September. Water temperatures are cold during snowmelt season through June, then warm to over 70 degrees during mid-summer. Water quality can be adversely affected by blue-green algae during the late summer. Wildfires regularly occur in the Klamath Mountains during the latter half of the summer, and can cause smoky conditions with poor air quality for extended periods of time.

The Nature Conservancy is looking for Restoration Ecologist. OFFICE LOCATION
Marblehead, Ohio, USA
The preferred office location is Northwest Ohio, but other locations may be considered.
The Restoration Ecologist provides technical leadership and support within TNC Ohio’s natural infrastructure strategy, which involves restoration of wetlands, floodplains, and riparian corridors to improve streams and lakes impacted by nutrients using scientific and collaborative approaches to achieve results. Ohio is rich in important water resources, and fortunately, growing awareness of threats to drinking water and support for water quality improvements is driving new opportunities for conservation across the state and region that will benefit nature and human wellbeing. TNC has ambitious goals to restore target watersheds most impacted by nutrient enrichment, focused in the Western Lake Erie, Scioto, and Great Miami watersheds. The Restoration Ecologist addresses these critical threats, fosters cross-site learning among the conservation community, and coordinates community support. They implement strategies to secure public and private support for TNC conservation priorities to maximize conservation outcomes. They manage the planning and implementation of multiple restoration projects across the state of Ohio including ongoing efforts on the Lake Erie coast. They will find a culture that supports and inspires conservation achievement and personal development, celebrates innovation, values collaborative approaches, and seeks lasting conservation results. They report to the Ohio Natural Infrastructure Director and work across priority Western Lake Erie Basin watersheds and our coastal wetlands. Strong preference is for this position to report to northwest Ohio, but other locations may be considered.
