About this event
The State of California spends more than a third of its estimated $248.3 billion General Fund Budget on K-12 education. The state Superintendent of Public Instruction (SPI) is an important, high-profile elected position responsible for leading the California Department of Education (CDE) and overseeing public education for more than 6 million K-12 students.

In the upcoming June Primary Election, Californians will be voting for a new superintendent. The top two vote-getters will advance to the General Election in November. To help voters with this critical decision, CPI and co-host AAUW California are hosting a free, open to the public, online candidate forum. All of the declared candidates have been invited to share their views on Saturday, April 25, 2026 from 9 am - 10:30am. As of press time, six of 10 candidates are confirmed to participate: Richard Barrera, Nichelle M. Henderson, Frank Lara, Wendy Casteneda Leal, Gus Mattammal, Al Maratsuchi, and Anthony Rendon.

Our February branch meeting featured Dr. Cindy Wolff speaking about her experiences with challenging Chico Unified's Title IX compliance with girls' sports programs. It was a fascinating look at our local issues in recent years, as well as those in the state and the nation today. We thank her for an excellent program, and we thank you for the wonderful turnout!

We enjoyed another successful Holiday Party with our members on Dec. 13th. The afternoon included live caroling by the Chico & PV High School Choir, as well as violin by Bill Bodnar. We ate and drank delicious refreshments, then played holiday trivia (congratulations to Team Naughty!). We also had the pleasure of meeting our CSU Chico Scholarship recipient, Lena Allbounaii, who plans to teach junior high school math here in Chico. Finally, Nat from Catalyst Domestic & Sexual Violence Services accepted our members' generous gift donations to brighten the season for some deserving families. What a pleasure to spend time with our members and our Tech Trek girls. Happy Holidays!

Our super successful Souper Supper meeting left us well fed and well informed! Special guest Sondra Murphy presented a history of women’s suffrage with a local twist. Co-prez Jana Lawton donated her beautiful handmade bowls as we raised money for AAUW Funds. Thanks again to those who provided delicious soups and desserts.
