The Office of Diversity and Inclusion wishes you all a happy, safe Thanksgiving! This year certainly has been full of many ups, and many downs. Today, we hope you spend this Thanksgiving focusing on the "ups" that you have had this year, however small, to counteract any negativity felt this year and look towards 2021 as an opportunity to make new, wonderful experiences and connections. We at ODI are very thankful for our many ODI students who have connected with one another and with their communities to make these past few months not feel so isolating! Our students certainly embody the definition of "inclusion"!

What are you thankful for this year?

The program is called Black Men in Medicine Cincinnati.

These last few months have been full of strife for many of our diversity students, who have had to juggle their medical education with reports of protests demanding justice against against racial inequity both at the level of the law and medicine.

It is during these times it is paramount to highlight the many advances that our students have achieved in light of these struggles.

Two of our ODI M4s have been selected for one of the most prestigious honors in all of medical school - entry into the AOA! Sarah Smith and TJ Calton have shown that persons of color will persevere throughout any challenge presented to them. They serve as beacons for all students of color who aspire to achieve greatness but feel as though the odds are against them. ODI sincerely congratulates Sarah and TJ for their immense hard work over these past 4 years, and have no doubt that they will be champions in working to increase diversity in medicine as practicing physicians!

The excellence in our student body is not limited to M4s. Many of our M2s have been selected to participate as members on the admissions committee. These amazing students will be at the forefront in recruiting additional students of color to the medical field. They are indispensable and invaluable additions to this committee because their input will significantly improve the rates of acceptance of students of color to medical school, and thus bring us one step closer to improving diversity across the field of medicine.

We would also like to bring attention to a select group of students who have been chosen to represent their students of color for their respective classes. They will serve as direct pipelines between medical students of color and faculty in charge of the M1-M4 curriculum. These students are essential in increasing the diversity of the curriculum, such as the recruitment of more diverse faculty and encouraging alterations in course material to better represent how medical conditions often are presented and treated differently in persons of color.

It goes without saying that the increase in diverse voices across UC COM also extends to the freshly minted M1s! Kellsa Mbah, Joy Owens, Hanna Ghefe, Dami Fakunle, and Azante Griffith have started to make their mark at UC, and are featured students on the UC COM Instagram! We would also like to give the spotlight to M1s who have expressed interest in changing health policy on a national level through working with the UC Chapter of the Student National Medical Association. These students include Nkiru Ezeakudo, Giovana Pinheiro, Will Smith, Isabella Toledo, Hanna Ghefe, Samantha De Jesus, Danielle Johnson, Joshua Vegas, Dami Fakunle, Joy Owns, and Alejandra Dumenigo.

At the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, we make our stand in training physicians to close health disparities. We take pride in the fact that from the onset of M1 until the end of M4, our ODI students demonstrate their intention to leave their mark on this university and becoming the leaders of a movement against racial injustice both in the law and in medicine. Go !

In these unprecedented times, it’s more important than ever for us to stand together and be one. That sentiment has not been at the heart of UCCOM since 2020, but since the founding back in 1819. Since 1819, UCCOM has sought out students of different backgrounds to bring their culture, their perspectives, and their undeniable strength to the medical field. On Saturday, we officially welcomed the UCCOM 2024 ODEI students at the annual diversity picnic. This was an opportunity for students to come together with their fellow peers, upperclassmen, and residents to share their stories and realize their dreams. On Saturday, we helped cement the idea that the new generation of physicians is here. And today, they began their classes. Today they start to make their dream a reality. Welcome, class of 2024!

So proud of our first year medical student Adam Butler on his acceptance to participate in the Association of Academic Physiatrist's Rehabilitation Research Experience this summer at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, Texas. Adam is also the recipient of the Dr. Marilyn Hughes Gaston academic scholarship and is an alumnus of the former ROSE program at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine during his last 2 years of College at Baldwin Wallace. We are immensely proud of Adam and we are lucky to have him as a Black Men In White Coats

Adam Butler, DFCM ROSE student alumni and first-year medical student at the College of Medicine, has been selected to participate in the Association of Academic Physiatrist’s (AAP) Rehabilitation Research Experience for Medical Students (RREMS). Butler will conduct research on lumbar spinal stenosis this summer at the Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center/University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He is the third recipient from the College of Medicine in the last six years to be selected for this program.
RREMS is an eight-week funded summer externship designed to expose medical students to a structured research experience and respected academic physiatrists. Established in 2007, the goal of RREMS is to enhance the visibility of the specialty and accelerate the development of high-caliber physicians and researchers in physical medicine and rehabilitation. In addition to the research completed during the program, many students are given the opportunity to spend time in the clinic with their mentors. Participants also are given a stipend, and the sponsor site covers registration and travel to the AAP’s annual meeting. Butler plans to present his findings at the 2021 AAP annual meeting in Anaheim.
