in 1819, Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise was born.

After arriving in the U.S. from Bohemia in 1846 and later settling in Cincinnati, Wise recognized the urgent need for a homegrown system to educate and ordain American rabbis. In 1875, that vision became reality with the establishment of Hebrew Union College, forever shaping the future of Jewish leadership and education. Wise’s work extended beyond the College, including the founding of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (now the Union for Reform Judaism) and the Central Conference of American Rabbis, institutions which remain vital to American Jewish life today.

As we continue celebrating our 150th anniversary, we’re proud of our place in history as a lasting foundation for Jewish life and learning – and we’re equally excited for the future.

It’s with great sadness that we share the painful and heartbreaking news that Rabbi Andrea L. Weiss, Ph.D., z”l, passed away yesterday at her home in Pennsylvania, surrounded by her family.

During her time at Hebrew Union College, Andrea shaped generations of students. With each graduating class, new rabbis, cantors, educators, and communal professionals enter the world inspired by her example. Her work embodies a calling at once scholarly and spiritual: to draw out new voices from ancient words and to guide a vibrant Jewish future.

Our hearts are with her husband Alan Tauber, their children Rebecca and Ilan, her father Marty Weiss, her siblings Mitch, Laura, and Roger, and Roger’s wife Catherine Corrigan. We hold them all in a circle of strength and prayers for comfort.

This is a tremendous loss for our entire community.

May her memory be for a blessing.

Today we honor the sacred memory of the victims and survivors of the Shoah on , which marks the 81st anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz‑Birkenau concentration camp. We remember the victims, the communities, and cultures that were destroyed, and the countless lives forever altered by unfathomable cruelty. We honor the survivors who rebuilt their lives with strength and dignity, carrying their stories forward so the world will never forget.

May their memories be a blessing, and may our remembrance strengthen our collective commitment to combating hatred and safeguarding human dignity for all.
