Primary elections are elections where voters indiciate their preference for their party's candidate in an upcoming general election, local election, or by-election. There are two kinds of primary elections: open primaries and closed primaries. Open primary elections are open to the public and allow voters to vote on the political party's ballot of their choosing. A closed primary election is restricted to voters who are already registered with particular political parties. Ohio has an open primary system, which means that Ohio voters can choose whichever party's ballot they would like; Ohio voters do not have to already be registered with a political party in order to vote in primary election.
