What can 1,600-year-old scraps of parchment tell us about ancient Rome? Quite a lot — including how they handled taxes. 🏛️📜

UC Classics Assistant Professor Matthijs Wibier pieced together and translated a previously unknown Roman legal text from fragments preserved in the Egyptian desert for more than 1,600 years.

Using clues from the parchment itself — and ultraviolet light to reveal the faded Latin — Wibier uncovered laws concerning taxes, public roads and infrastructure, offering a rare glimpse into everyday life and government in the Roman Empire. 🔎

UC alumna and College of Arts and Sciences Senior Academic Adviser Arin Gentry founded the As Told By Foundation in 2020 with a mission to put books into the hands of young readers and empower them to tell their own stories.

Now, the organization is continuing to grow:
📖 2,000+ new books funded through a recent $5,000 grant
🏫 A new after-school reading pilot launching this year
🐾 A co-op opportunity for an A&S student to support literacy programs and community partnerships

“Reading and literacy are a very powerful tool,” Gentry said.
