Christopher Donnay ’18 received the Paul R. Halmos-Lester R. Ford Award for mathematical writing.

After double majoring in public policy analysis and politics at Pomona College, Meagan Tokunaga Block ’15 forged a trail to the State Capitol to tackle California’s housing and homelessness crisis.

As director of program development and strategic initiatives at the California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA), Tokunaga Block conveys how the Golden State can provide better assistance to low- and moderate-income renters and homebuyers.

Appointed to the role earlier this year by Governor Gavin Newsom, the Pomona College alumna distills technical concepts and core questions surrounding affordable housing down to bullet points for the Legislature and other government partners to decide how to optimize CalHFA programs.

Meagan Tokunaga Block ’15 cut her teeth in public service at Pomona, where she earned degrees in public policy analysis (with a concentration in environmental analysis) and politics. She also started 140 games for the Sagehens’ softball team.

Pomona College students envisioning a career in healthcare got a sneak preview of what their future could be like during summer internships supported by the Pomona College Internship Program (PCIP). PCIP provides a stipend for unpaid or low-paid internships offering valuable career-building experience.

The first week of classes at Pomona College is underway, and Convocation on Tuesday marked the ceremonial start to the academic year.

Faculty in their academic regalia, along with students, staff and guests of the College, streamed from all corners of campus into Bridges Hall of Music to take part in the 110-year-old tradition.

“There is a unique sense of anticipation in the air,” said Avis Hinkson, vice president for student affairs and dean of students, in her address. “And the campus has come alive in pursuit of knowledge, relationship and possibilities.”

For more than 400 new students at Pomona College, Orientation Adventure offered three days to experience Southern California and bond with new classmates. They could "choose their own adventure," ranging from surf lessons to rock climbing, visiting the Aquarium of the Pacific to community service.

The experience has been free of charge for all new students since 1995 as part of the College's welcome to life at Pomona.

Pomona College welcomed the Class of 2030 and new transfer students at Convocation marking the start of their Sagehen journey.

President G. Gabrielle Starr welcomed new students on behalf of the College, while ASPC President Malu Estoducto ’27 also addressed the community. This year’s keynote speaker was Professor of Economics Fernando Lozano.

Ali Bennett ’27 was one of three students to use the Pomona College Internship Program (PCIP) this summer to trial a career in an athletics field. As a data and analytics intern with the San Francisco Seagulls Baseball Academy, the mathematics major handled game-day technologies and later analyzed statistics.
