Mid-Week Muse:

Back in 1969 on this day (June 3), a unique and innovative children's book was published and became an instant classic. It was called "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle. The book is special because of its interactive, die-cut holes, allowing children to physically "eat" through pages. This, combined with Eric Carleโ€™s vibrant collage illustrations create a simple, hopeful story of transformation. It combines engaging storytelling with educational lessons on counting, days of the week, and nature's metamorphosis, making it a beloved, timeless classic.

"The Very Hungry Caterpillar" has been translated into over 70 languages and has sold over 55 million copies worldwide. The Woodward Library has a copy in the Juvenile Collection on level one and it may be found here: https://apsu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01APSU_INST/dju5e5/alma991007435741008071.

Two for Tuesday!

This week, weโ€™re launching deep into the unknown, where survival depends on secrets and the very fate of humanity hangs in the balance:

๐Ÿฆ  "Wool" by Hugh Howey: This is the first book in the "Silo" trilogy. Beneath the surface of a ruined world, humanity clings to life inside a massive underground siloโ€ฆ but what lies beyond the walls may be more terrifying than anyone imagined. Think dystopian survival, hidden truths, and a slow-burn unraveling of reality itself.

๐Ÿ‘ฝ "The Three-Body Problem" by Liu Cixin: When humanity makes contact with an alien civilization from a chaotic star system, the laws of physics (and everything we thought we knew about the universe) are thrown into question. Expect cosmic scale, mind-bending science, and first contact like youโ€™ve never seen before.

From sealed silos to unstable star systems, this is science fiction at its most imaginative. Both of the books may be found in the Woodward Library's Popular Collection, located on the main floor. If you have read one (or both) of these stories, please let us know in the comments below: ๐Ÿ‘‡

Monday Motivation !

"I've been talking about going back to college for as long as I can remember. During the pandemic, I audited a few online classes and loved it. I don't know if younger me would have been able to hear it, but it's about so much more than getting good grades. I don't even take classes for credit; I just take them for knowledge, and that's entirely okay. God, how I wish my studio teacher wasn't the only adult in my life who had encouraged me to go to college. I really wish I'd gone when I was college-age, not just for the "college experience." *wink* But to have learned all these things that are enriching my life now, decades ago." ~ Wil Wheaton, STILL JUST A GEEK

If you'd like to read more bits of wisdom from Wil, you may find this book on the Woodward Library's Featured Book Shelf on the main floor of the library.

๐Ÿง™โ€โ™‚๏ธ MYSTIC MAKERS Success! โœจ

Our Mystic Makers program is a huge success! Attendees design their own custom HeroForge characters, which are then magically transformed by our 3D resin printers in the Woodward Library Makerspace. Then our heroes bring their miniatures to life by painting them!

All painting supplies are provided and the finished miniature is theirs to keep - perfect for D&D and tabletop games or display! These are just a few examples of the awesomeness created at the last Mystic Makers painting session, on Friday, April 24.

If you're interested in joining the fun or have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Deanna Sherry ([email protected]) or Scott Shumate ([email protected]).

Mid-Week Muse:

On this day (May 27) in 1963, Colombia Records released "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan," which was the singer/songwriter's second studio album. It contained such hits as "Blowin' in the Wind," "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall," and "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," and has often been seen as the album which cemented his critical and commercial success.

The Woodward Library has a copy of one of the most comprehensive biographies about Bob Dylan, called "No Direction Home: The Life and Music of Bob Dylan" by Robert Shelton. If you're a fan of Bob Dylan, this is a must-read. If you're not, but are curious about how he became such a giant in the music industry, you should check it out. It is located in our General Book Collection on the third floor of the library and may be found here: https://apsu.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01APSU_INST/dju5e5/alma991004279769708071alma991004279769708071

Two for Tuesday:

Are you looking for something spooky to sink your teeth into? This week, weโ€™re serving up an eerie pair of reads:

๐Ÿฉธ "The Southern Book Clubโ€™s Guide To Slaying Vampires" by Grady Hendrix
Described as "Steel Magnolias meets Dracula," this is a sharp, darkly funny tale of suburban life turned sinister, where book clubs become battlegrounds and southern charm hides something far more dangerous.

๐ŸŒฟ "The Bog Wife" by Kay Chronister
This haunting story is moody, unsettling, and steeped in folklore which pulls you deep into the shadows of family secrets and the supernatural pull of the land itself. It has been characterized as "Appalachian Gothic."

Both books may be found in the Woodward Library's Popular Collection on the main floor.

If you've read one (or both!) of these unnerving stories, please let us know what you thought in the comments below ๐Ÿ‘‡:
